Every Student. Every Day. The Mission is Possible!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the upcoming school year! We are excited to welcome our students back to a fresh year of learning, growth, and community here at Quander Road School.
As we prepare for day one, we want to inform you about an important change regarding cell phone use on campus. This year, a new Virginia state law (Code of Virginia § 22.1-79.3:1) goes into effect that strictly prohibits students from using cell phones from the moment the school day begins until the final bell rings (bell to bell). Please note that under this new legislation, students will no longer be allowed to use their phones during lunch.
Why This Matters
While we understand this is a significant shift, our primary goal is to foster an environment where your child can thrive. Research and experience have shown that a phone-free school day offers immense benefits, including:
-
A Safer, Distraction-Free Environment: Without the constant buzz of notifications, students can fully focus on their academics, teachers, and peer interactions.
-
Improved Mental Health and Well-being: Stepping away from social media and texting during the day significantly reduces anxiety, curtails cyberbullying, and allows students to truly reset.
-
True Social Connection: By replacing screen time with face-to-face conversations during lunch and breaks, students build stronger, healthier friendships.
How It Works: Daily Routine
To ensure compliance with the state law and keep our classrooms focused, we are implementing a secure check-in system:
-
Morning Arrival: Upon entering the building each morning, students will turn off their phones and place them into a secure, designated phone locker.
-
During the Day: Phones will remain safely locked away for the duration of the school day.
-
Dismissal: Students will retrieve their phones from their locker at the end of the day before boarding the bus or departing campus.
*In Case of Emergency: We understand that parents need to reach their children for urgent matters. If you have an emergency and need to contact your student during the school day, please call the Quander Road main front office at (703) 718-2400, and our staff will assist you immediately.
We deeply appreciate your partnership and support in implementing this new policy. By working together, we can ensure our students enjoy a focused, healthy, and highly successful school year.
To confirm your commitment to the updated policy at Quander Rd. School, please ensure both you and your student sign the agreement provided below. This completed document must be submitted to the school administration on the first day of school. If you prefer, you complete and submit your agreement electronically.

Welcome back!
In just a few weeks school will start again (August, 24th). I know more than a few excited parents! I am hopeful that over the next few weeks parents will start having those important conversations about school expectations, listen to your child's concerns and ask what do they look forward too. Perfect attendance and honor roll are still opportunities for your student to shine.
Parents, you have poured so much into your student, now is the time to have them show their work. Each student is encouraged to be his/her own advocate, while respecting the space, time and property of others.
Let's start the new school year off right, be an informed consumer, get connected on ParentVue/StudentVue, visit the administrative team at Quander Road School and make sure your student keeps up with the school issued laptop.
It's because of our partnership, students will be resilient, and find success.
Enjoy the next few weeks.
Warmly,
Adrian Williams
