The Dunne Dispatch (Back to School Edition) - July 31, 2026

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am writing to invite you to our annual back-to-school celebration and to encourage your participation in our annual drive for school supplies for students in need.

Annual Back-to-School Celebration

Supervisor Dan Storck and I would like to invite you and your family to join our annual “Back to School Community Day” on Saturday, August 1 at 10 AM-2 PM at the Lorton Community Center, 9520 Richmond Highway, Lorton.

For the fourth year, Supervisor Storck and I are sponsoring this event to provide Mount Vernon District families with the opportunity to enjoy fun and games, food, music, Touch-a-Truck (including a fire truck and electric school bus), and exhibitors.

In addition, we are offering free school supplies for Mount Vernon District families, courtesy of generous donations by event sponsors. School supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All recipients will be required to present proof of residency in Fairfax County. If accompanied by children, supplies will be limited to one bag per child. (If unaccompanied, supplies will be limited to one bag per adult.)

Annual School Supplies Drive

In order to provide a world-class education to every student, we have to ensure that every student has sufficient school supplies. While our annual “Back to School Community Day” provides over 1,000 students with school supplies every year, there continues to be significant unmet needs at elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools throughout the Mount Vernon District.

Every year, I work with my staff and Educate Fairfax to organize an annual school supplies drive for students in need. This year, we are seeking to raise sufficient funding to provide 300 students with school supplies. As we did last year, we will be reaching out to PTAs and PTOs for donations, and we will be partnering with local stores to solicit donations from the community.

  • A $15 donation provides a full set of essential school supplies for one student.
  • A $25 donation provides a brand-new backpack fully stocked with school supplies for one student.

I would like to applaud and recognize Mansion House Club for their recent swim-a-thon to provide school supplies to students at Riverside ES and Washington Mill ES. Their efforts are inspiring!

I would also like to recognize the Alfred Street Baptist Church and South County HS PTSO for their generous donations last year, which enabled us to provide school supplies to students at:

  • Bucknell ES
  • Cameron ES
  • Hollin Meadows ES
  • Lorton Station ES
  • Mount Eagle ES
  • Newington Forest ES
  • Saratoga ES
  • Washington Mill ES
  • Woodlawn ES
  • Woodley Hills ES
  • Whitman MS
  • Bryant HS
  • Mount Vernon HS
  • West Potomac HS

Finally, I would like to thank my staff aides Nelda Brown and Sarah Goodell for their tireless work to support students in need.

Very Respectfully,

Mateo Dunne

Mateo Dunne, Mount Vernon District Representative
