Greetings Marshall Statesmen and Families:
I hope this message finds you, your family and loved ones enjoying a restful summer. I wanted to reach out to provide an update on our preparations for the 26-27 school year. Staff is hard at work filling any remaining vacancies, preparing the building for teachers and students and planning the details for a smooth opening of school on August 24.
As previously communicated by the Region 5 office, I returned to Marshall to serve as the interim principal while a new principal is selected to lead the school. It’s a privilege for me to step back in the principal role I filled from 2005-2014 and support the Marshall Community. During my time in FCPS I spent 25 years working in high schools with most of that time at Edison High School and Marshall High School. After leaving Marshall, I spent another 10 years working in Regions 2, 4 and 5 supporting schools and principals.
The principal selection process continues to move forward through the Region 5 office. As soon as a new principal is selected, the Region 5 office will make an official announcement and provide an opportunity to meet the new principal.
The upcoming school year brings a change to the Marshall High School bell schedule. Prior to my arrival, the school worked with students and staff to provide feedback on the current bell schedule and intervention block. Advisory, Learn and Return are being replaced with Homeroom and Flex. All students will be assigned a homeroom during 4th period where they will report each blue day. Think of the 4th period homeroom as the new advisory. Students will then be able to request access to visit their teachers using SecurelyFlex, a pass system designed for this purpose and used at other FCPS high schools, after homeroom is over. This modification to the schedule provides students with greater flexibility in how they use the time every other day to best support their learning and enrichment needs. Flex preserves student choice that they enjoyed during Learn. From an operational perspective, the homeroom for all students allows us to deliver necessary programming when needed and, at the same time, greater accountability for students’ location during 4th period. I recognize everyone responds differently to change. We will monitor the implementation of this bell schedule and make adjustments if necessary as the year progresses.
Before closing, I ask your support in two specific areas – attendance and cell phones. Marshall ended the year with a chronic absenteeism rate of 16.7%. That means 366 students missed 18 or more full days of school. While we had a slight improvement as compared to last year, I am confident we can do better as a community. Bottom line, attendance matters. Individual absences add up. If we can support you with your student’s attendance, please reach out.
Senate Bill 108 is a new Virginia law that went into effect on July 1. It requires that all schools in the state follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy and prohibit cellphone possession and use for the entire school day. The updated FCPS Cellphone Policy aligns with this law, which means high school students are no longer able to use cellphones, cellphone accessories, or smart devices (like smart glasses, earbuds, headsets, and other items connected to the phone) during lunchtime. This marks a change from last year when students were permitted to use their phones during lunch.
It’s a privilege to return to Marshall as interim principal. I remain committed to supporting the school until the new principal is named. Enjoy these final days of summer.

Statesman Start
We will host our Statesmen Start back-to-school kick-off on Thursday, August 20th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.
Statesmen Start is an opportunity for our community to reunite. Our PTSA and Athletic Boosters will be present to handle your membership forms, which can be found on the PTSA and Marshall High School websites as well as an attachment with this communication. Spirit wear, yearbooks, and other items will be on sale. Clubs and organizations will also be present. School staff will be available to process ParentVue requests.
Marshall faculty and staff will be available to hand out Chromebooks for every rising 9th grader and every student new to Marshall. Once a student receives their Chromebook, they will need to turn it on and log in before they leave the building.
We will have parent and support stations to support you with signing up for ParentVUE and to aid in filling out free and reduced lunch applications.
9th Grade and New Student Orientation
Get ready, new Statesmen—this is your moment! On Friday, August 21th, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. , we are rolling out the red carpet for all incoming 9th graders and students new to Marshall. This is your chance to walk your schedule, meet your teachers face-to-face, and connect in small groups with our incredible faculty and student leaders—all before the first bell even rings. You'll leave feeling confident, connected, and ready to own this school year.
Parents and guardians, you're invited too! Join us in the auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a special session designed just for you. Learn what it takes to help your student thrive at Marshall, get your questions answered, and become part of our community from day one. This program is optional, but we highly encourage you to come be part of the excitement!
Let's kick off this year together—strong, proud, and united as one Marshall Community. We can't wait to see you there!

Students should report to the auditorium for the opening session. Please ensure that your student is at the respective elementary/middle school at least 5 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
At the conclusion of the program, buses will depart Marshall High School at 11:35 a.m.
NEW Bell Schedule
Red Day classes include Period 1 (8:10–9:37), Period 3 (9:43–11:14), Period 5 with lunch (11:20–1:20), and Period 7 (1:26–2:55).
Blue Day classes include Period 2 (8:10–9:37), followed by Homeroom (9:43–10:15) and Flex (10:15–11:14), then Period 6 with lunch (11:20–1:20), and Period 8 (1:26–2:55).
Updated Cellphone Policy: No Phones or Devices During Lunch for High School Students

Across all grade levels, cellphones, cellphone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (like a smartwatch) must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day, too. Personal devices that connect to a cellphone or cellphone accessory or operate as a smart device must also follow the FCPS Cellphone Policy.
This policy does not apply to school-issued devices. However, school-issued devices must be used in accordance with FCPS Regulation 6410, Acceptable Use Policy, which allows the use of school-issued devices for educational purposes. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.
New Student ID Cards Coming This Fall
This fall, every FCPS student will receive a student identification (ID) card as part of a divisionwide effort to modernize school transportation, improve communication with families, and strengthen student safety while traveling to and from school.
Every student who rides the school bus will need to tap on and tap off the bus every day using their new student ID card. Families can help by reinforcing this new habit with their child.
All students at our school will need to wear their student ID cards throughout the school day. We will be handing out the new student ID cards the first few weeks of school. More details will be shared soon.

New ParentVUE Mobile App Launched July 28
On Tuesday, July 28, a new ParentVUE mobile app will become available in the Apple and Google app stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app will remain active for about six months. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.
In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature.

Transportation Information for Parents
As we prepare for the start of the school year, please note the following important transportation dates:

August 7: Transportation information will be available in ParentVUE. Parents can log in to view their child's bus assignment, stop location, and pickup/drop-off times.

August 14: Families of eligible general education and special education bus riders will receive an eNotify message with route information and a transportation intent reminder. Continue checking ParentVUE, as transportation information may be updated before school begins.

August 17–21: Families of students who ride a special education bus will receive a phone call from Transportation to confirm bus stop locations and pickup/drop-off times. Parents may also review transportation information in ParentVUE.

August 19: This is the final transportation update before the start of school. Any transportation changes made after August 19 will not appear in ParentVUE until August 25.
Reminder: Please check ParentVUE regularly before the first day of school to ensure you have the most up-to-date transportation information for your student.
Request PSAT and SAT School Day Testing Accommodations and Multilingual Support
FCPS high schools will give the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to 10th and 11th graders on Wednesday, October 7. That same day, 12th graders will participate in SAT School Day.
Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or multilingual support. Families can view Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about College Board accommodations on the FCPS website.
If you have a student with disabilities in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the accommodations request process and return forms to the high school by Monday, August 3.
If you have a multilingual learner (ML) in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the ML support request process and return forms by Thursday, August 27, if you wish to request ML support for the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day.

Back-to-School Immunization Requirements
Make sure your child has all of their required immunizations before the first day of school. Check their immunization records to see what they might be missing. You can:
- Request immunization records online through the Virginia Immunization Information System (a free service).
- If your child was immunized outside of Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
- Request records from your health care provider. Some may charge for copies.
Review school-required immunizations to verify that your child is up to date.
Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th GradersSeveral immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades.
- All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 and 12, but can be given as early as 9 years old.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive two doses of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.
As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Where to Receive Immunizations
If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your family’s healthcare provider or one of the following immunization events.
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.
If you do not have a healthcare provider, visit a Health Department clinic. Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) clinics offer immunizations to all Fairfax County students, as well as those who are behind on their scheduled immunizations or need a booster.
Summer back-to-school immunization clinics are also available. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. FCHD offers limited walk-in hours for immunization services on a first-come, first-served basis. Immunizations are also available by appointment.
Inova Cares Back to School Pediatric Health Fairs provide children ages 5 and up with free school physicals and immunizations. Weekend clinics are available in July and August. These health fairs are for VA Medicaid or Uninsured Inova registered patients only. Appointments are required. Call 703-698-2550 to make an appointment. Bring vaccine records to the appointment.
