As I move into my third week, one core truth keeps coming back to me: learning happens best in community.
Building a thriving school environment isn't just about what happens inside our classrooms, it's about the connections, partnerships, and leadership that happen across our entire Oakton family.
I had a fantastic reminder of this past week at our FCPS Leadership Kickoff, where I had the privilege of meeting one of our very own Oakton High School students, senior Rijuta Purankar. Rijuta served as an intern with FCPS this summer, supporting the Robotics & Automation Initiatives with the Department of Information Technology (DIT). By engaging in authentic work-based learning experiences that prepare students for future careers, she represented Oakton HS with remarkable dedication and skill. (See picture)
Seeing our students step up into leadership roles across the district inspires me, and it highlights the immense talent and heart within our community.
As we continue preparing for the start of the school year, our admin team and staff remain focused on creating a supportive, connected environment for our students—unlocking potential as we learn and grow together. I am especially looking forward to kicking off Fall sports and meeting even more of our incredible students and families in the weeks ahead!

Summer Office Hours
During the summer and through August 7, the Oakton HS Main Office will be open from 9am-1pm, Monday to Friday.
We do recommend a call in advance of your visit to ensure that we have the appropriate staff members available to address your concern as many staff members are off contract during the summer.
Registration
For families new to Oakton High School looking to register, please fill out information found on our website at https://oaktonhs.fcps.edu/student-services/new-student-registration
After you submit the form, you will be contacted by our Registrar, Mr. Patrick Chang, to schedule a registration appointment. We encourage you to submit the form as soon as possible so we can schedule your appointment!

Parking Applications for the 2026-2027 School Year are Available!
We are now accepting parking applications from juniors and seniors. All applications are due by 3:00pm on Wednesday, August 12. Please find the application and more information on our website if you search for “parking” - Parking Applications for the 2026-2027 School Year.
Meals for Students Available Through August 21
No-cost meals will be provided to students on a first-come, first-served basis through Friday, August 21, at the sites and times listed on the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage. Students must remain on site while eating their meals.
Apply Today for Free and Reduced-Price Meals!
According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Studies show that students who eat both school breakfast and lunch tend to have healthier diets than those who don't participate in school meals.
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch for their students at no cost or at a reduced cost. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.
The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Clinic Information
Welcome from our health room!
The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Division’s primary goal is to promote the health and well-being of school-aged children. The School Health Division consists of Public Health Nurses (PHNs), School Health Aides (SHAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), who provide various services to support this goal. PHNs create individualized health plans for students with complex health conditions and train school staff to help meet these needs during the school day. Meanwhile, SHAs and LPNs provide direct care to sick and injured students by following standardized protocols or health plans. They also administer medications and conduct vision and hearing screenings.

FinalForms Information:
- FCPS will be using a new student activities registration platform, FinalForms, beginning this school year. All students who plan to participate in sports or VHSL activities (Debate, One Act, Speech, Robotics and It’s Academic) must register using Final Forms.
- FinalForms is now live, the parent or guardian with the ParentVUE account in the FCPS Student Information System (SIS) has received an email with instructions for creating an account and completing the registration process. Only the ParentVUE account holder will receive the initial email invitation.

Testing Information
SAT School Day and PSAT/NMSQT 2026
SAT School Day and PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) exams will be held at each Oakton High School on Wednesday, October 7, at no cost to families. The digital SAT School Day exam is offered to 12th grade students, and the digital PSAT/NMSQT exam is provided to 10th and 11th grade students.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and Multilingual Learner Supports
Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or multilingual learner (ML) supports. If you have a student with disabilities entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, please review the accommodations request process and return forms to our school by August 3, 2026, to request new or updated College Board testing accommodations.
If you have a multilingual learner (ML) entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, please review the ML support request process and return forms by August 27, 2026, if you wish to request ML supports for the October 2025 PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day.

Student Services
School Counselor Availability
Please note that our school counselors’ last day of contract for this school year was Tuesday, June 23, 2026. They will begin responding to correspondence received over the summer on Thursday, August 6 upon their return for the 2026-2027 school year!
Tutoring Resources for Families
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Is your student experiencing anxiety, behavior changes, or challenges with peer and family relationships? If so, you may refer your child for weekly therapy with a licensed therapist through Hazel Health. Visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for information on this service.

New ParentVUE Mobile App Launching July 28
On Tuesday, July 28, a new ParentVUE mobile app will become available in the Apple and Google app stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app will remain active for about six months. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.
In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature.

New Student ID Cards Coming This Fall
This fall, every FCPS student will receive a student identification (ID) card as part of a divisionwide effort to modernize school transportation, improve communication with families, and strengthen student safety while traveling to and from school.
Every student who rides the school bus will need to tap on and tap off the bus every day using their new student ID card. Families can help by reinforcing this new habit with their child.
All students at our school will need to wear their student ID cards throughout the school day. We will be handing out the new student ID cards the first few weeks of school. More details will be shared soon.

Updated Cellphone Policy: No Phones or Devices During Lunch for High School Students
Senate Bill 108 is a new Virginia law that went into effect on July 1. It requires that all schools in the state follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy and prohibit cellphone possession and use for the entire school day. The updated FCPS Cellphone Policy aligns with this law, which means high school students are no longer able to use cellphones, cellphone accessories, or smart devices (like smart glasses, earbuds, headsets, and other items connected to the phone) during lunchtime.
Across all grade levels, cellphones, cellphone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (like a smartwatch) must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day, too. Personal devices that connect to a cellphone or cellphone accessory or operate as a smart device must also follow the FCPS Cellphone Policy.
This policy does not apply to school-issued devices. However, school-issued devices must be used in accordance with FCPS Regulation 6410, Acceptable Use Policy, which allows the use of school-issued devices for educational purposes. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.

Open Positions & Descriptions:

President: Leads the PTSA, sets meeting agendas, oversees all programs and committees, and serves as the main liaison between the school administration and PTSA. Ideal for someone who enjoys leadership, organization, and collaboration.

Communications Chair: Manages our newsletters, social media, and promotional materials. Best for someone with strong writing, a creative bend of mind and design skills.

Hospitality Co-Chair: Plan and organize teacher and staff breakfasts. Consisting of a healthy grab-and-go breakfast. Currently, a once-a-month event.

Student Support Chair: Recruits and organizes volunteers for school student events. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys engaging in student-related activities and overseeing volunteers.

All Night Grad Party Chair: Oversees the planning, fundraising, and execution of the senior All Night Grad Party for 2026-2027. Making it a memorable, fun and a safe place for our graduates. Responsibilities include fundraising, coordinating with vendors, managing volunteers, securing donations/sponsorships, and ensuring logistics run smoothly. This role is ideal for an individual with a fondness for event planning, and a strong passion for providing seniors with a memorable farewell.

Mini-Grant Chair: Coordinates the PTSA’s mini-grant program, which provides funding to teachers and students for clubs, projects, or innovative ideas. Responsibilities include publicizing the grant application process, organizing application review, and working with the PTSA board to award funds. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys supporting educators and managing small-scale funding programs.
Whether you have a few hours a month or more time to give, there’s a role for you. Being part of the PTSA is a wonderful way to make a difference, meet other families, and help shape the experience of every Cougar on campus.
