Dear Franconia Neighbors and Friends,
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to visit the new Kingstowne Regional Library, located on the second floor of the Franconia Governmental Center. Walking through the library brought back wonderful memories of taking my daughters to the library during the summer and signing them up for the summer reading program. Those visits gave us time to discover new stories, learn together, and enjoy a simple outing close to home.
That same spirit of discovery is alive throughout our community this summer. Fairfax County Public Library’s Summer Reading Adventure, “Unearth a Story,” invites readers to explore dinosaurs, paleontology, archaeology, and hidden histories. Families with children in pre-K through sixth grade can also participate in the BOOK IT! Summer of Stories program through August 31st. Children who reach their monthly reading goals can earn a free Personal Pan Pizza from a participating Pizza Hut location.
There are many other ways to enjoy the remaining weeks of summer. Families can explore the wooded trails and wildlife at Lake Accotink, Huntley Meadows, and Hidden Pond, or attend a free concert, children’s show, cultural performance, or outdoor movie through the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Summer Entertainment Series, which continues through August 22nd.
A new school year will be here before we know it, and I am excited about all the opportunities ahead for our students and families. To help you prepare, I have included several important resources and reminders below.

💉Back-to-School Immunizations
Please review your child’s immunization records and make sure all required vaccinations are completed before the first day of school.

Rising seventh graders must receive:
- Tdap vaccine
- MenACWY vaccine
- HPV vaccine*
*Parents or guardians may choose for their child not to receive the HPV vaccine. No documentation is required.

Rising 12th graders must receive:
- Two doses of the MenACWY vaccine
- At least one dose must be administered at age 16 or older

🍴Summer Meals
No-cost summer meals will continue to be available to students through Friday, August 21, at participating FCPS locations. Meals are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and must be eaten on site. Visit the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage for current locations and serving times.
🍽️Free and Reduced-Price Meals
The Free and Reduced-Price Meals application (Spanish) is now available for the 2026–27 school year. Families must submit a new application each school year. Students who qualified last year will remain eligible for the first 30 school days or until a new application is processed.
Applying may also connect eligible students with additional benefits, so I encourage families to apply as soon as possible. Please visit the FCPS Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage or contact your school if you need assistance.
🧑⚕️Mental Health Support for Middle School Students
FCPS has expanded its partnership with Hazel Health to provide virtual mental health services to students enrolled in all FCPS middle schools. Families may contact Hazel Health if they are concerned about changes in their child’s mood or behavior, need mental health support, or are having difficulty finding a community therapist. 🎒Pre-K Registration
Give Your Kids a Strong Start: Apply for Early Childhood Education Programs
FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children ages 6 weeks to 4 years living in Fairfax County with economic and educational risk factors.
- The pre-K program prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30.
- Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from expectant mothers and parents/guardians of children 6 weeks to 2 years old.
Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. However, space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first come, first served basis. Applications are accepted online, by email, by postal mail (printable application), or in person at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.
