Dear Floris Families,
I hope you are continuing to enjoy a wonderful summer! While many of our students are making the most of these final weeks of break, our Floris team has been hard at work preparing for an outstanding school year.
Last week, our administrative team participated in the Fairfax County Public Schools Leadership Conference at Fairfax High School. Throughout the week, we engaged in professional learning with school leaders from across the division, exploring new ideas, best practices, and strategies to strengthen teaching, learning, and school culture. We are excited to bring this learning back to Floris Elementary as we continue our work to ensure every child has an exceptional educational experience.
As we prepare for the first day of school, we are continuing to register new students. If you know of families in your neighborhood who have recently moved into the Floris attendance area and have not yet registered their child, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible. Early registration helps us plan for classes, staffing, and student supports to ensure a smooth start for everyone.
Our registrar, Vernella, is available to assist families through the registration process and answer any questions they may have. We appreciate your help in spreading the word to new neighbors and welcoming them to the Floris community.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We look forward to sharing more updates in the coming weeks as we get closer to welcoming our Eagles back to school.
Sincerely,
Principal Joshua DeSmyter

Cindy Hung: Special Education Teacher
Hello! My name is Mrs. Hung, and I am thrilled to join the Floris community as a special education teacher. I hold two master's degrees and bring extensive teaching experience from both the private sector and Fairfax County Public Schools, alongside a diverse background as part of a foreign service family living across the globe, most recently in Germany where I worked for the US consulate over the past few years. Outside of school, I love traveling, staying active, and spending time with my husband and two middle school daughters. I am truly looking forward to partnering with you this year to create a safe, engaging environment where your child can grow and thrive.

Zahra Raeisi: Special Education Teacher
Hello! My Name is Zahra Raeisi, and I’m excited to be returning to Floris community as a Learning Disability teacher. I previously had a privilege of working at Floris for two years before accepting my first classroom teaching position at another school, where I gained valuable experience and continued to grow as an educator. I am thrilled to be coming back to a school; that has always felt like home. I’m passionate about supporting students, helping them discover their strengths, and creating a classroom where every child feels valued, encouraged, and successful. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces, meeting new students and families, and making this a wonderful school year together.

New ParentVUE Mobile App Launched
On Tuesday, a new ParentVUE mobile app will become available in the Apple and Google app stores. This new app provides parents and caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app will remain active for about six months. Families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.
In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this security feature.
Learn more about installing the new ParentVUE app. Parents needing assistance should submit a Parent Support Request.

New Student ID Cards Coming This Fall
This fall, every FCPS student will receive a student identification (ID) card as part of a divisionwide effort to modernize school transportation, improve communication with families, and strengthen student safety while traveling to and from school.
Every student who rides the school bus will need to tap on and tap off the bus every day using their new student ID card. Families can help by reinforcing this new habit with their child.
All students at our school will need to wear their student ID cards throughout the school day. We will be handing out the new student ID cards the first few weeks of school. More details will be shared soon.
