Dear Floris Families,
I hope you are continuing to enjoy a wonderful summer with family and friends! While many of you are making the most of these last weeks of summer break, our team has been hard at work preparing for an exciting start to the 2026–2027 school year. We can't wait to welcome our students back on Monday, August 24th!
As many of you know, this year brings an exciting new chapter for Floris Elementary as we welcome approximately 55 students and their families from Coates Elementary School through the recent boundary adjustments. To support our growing school community, we have also increased our staffing by 20 additional team members, allowing us to continue providing the high-quality learning experiences and support our students deserve.
As I shared in my last Floris Family message, I am thrilled that every position at Floris has been filled, and we are fortunate to have an incredible team ready to serve our students and families.
Over the next several weeks, I will be introducing our newest staff members in each weekly Floris Family message. You'll have an opportunity to learn a little about each person, their role at Floris, and the talents they bring to our school community. We are excited for you to get to know them and join us in giving them a warm Floris welcome!
There is so much to look forward to as we prepare for another amazing school year. Together, we will continue building a school where every child feels welcomed, supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.

We're excited to welcome our Eagles back for another great school year! Please save these important dates:
📧 Tuesday, August 18 – Class Placement Notification
- Families of enrolled students will receive their child's homeroom teacher assignment.
- Notifications will be sent during the afternoon via an eNotify message from Principal DeSmyter.
🏫 Thursday, August 20 – Open House
Meet your child's teacher, see the classroom, and bring school supplies!

Thalia Luduena: MLL Teacher
My name is Ms. Luduena and I am entering my 7th year of teaching overall with it being my 4th year in FCPS. I moved to Virginia from New Jersey back in 2020. I have experienced working with students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Outside of school I enjoy traveling with my husband and going to the gym. I am looking forward to joining the Floris team as a multilingual learner teacher!
