Dear Mighty Red Bird Families,

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and that your days are filled with sunshine, laughter, and fun!

While our Mighty Red Birds are off making summer memories, our incredible custodial team has been hard at work preparing our school for the upcoming academic year. We are so grateful for everything they do behind the scenes to keep Cardinal Forest looking its very best.

Campus Survival Kits

Cardinal Forest Campus Survival Kits for the 2026-2027 school year are live, and you can place your order online through the Campus Survival Kits Website!

Orders are due July 15, 2026. The kit contains the necessary supplies for your student and a headphone guarantee! The school receives a mid-year supply restock based on the number of kits purchased. Thank you for your support! 

How to Order:

Supply kits will be delivered to your child's classroom in the fall!


FCPS Pre-K –Apply Now 🍎

The FCPS PreK programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children ages 4 and 3 years old by September 30 who live in Fairfax County.  At Cardinal Forest there are still slots for eligible students! Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; students who are 4 years old and those with multiple risk factors are prioritized.

Applications are accepted online, by email, or by mail or in person at our office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.

Please note, our summer office hours are 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

Early Release Wednesdays for 2026-2027

FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year. The number has been reduced from eight to four days. 

Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with their peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.

Summer Meals for Students

This summer, no-cost meals are provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the sites and times listed on the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage. Students must remain on site while eating their meals.

This year, thanks to generous support from Educate Fairfax, families may also receive one no-cost breakfast and lunch per adult at the following elementary schools: Braddock, Dogwood, Glen Forest, Hutchison, Hybla Valley, and London Towne.

Summer sites will continue to be added, so please check the Summer Food webpage regularly for updates.

FCPS’ Summer Resource Guide has activities and tips on a variety of subjects and interests, from camps and activities to health and safety resources. 

Be sure to check back over the summer, as more resources may be added. 

Learning Doesn’t Take a Vacation and Neither Does Fun!The FCPS Summer Learning webpage offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until August. Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce concepts, and stay engaged!


📚 Summer Reading!

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program (Grades 1–6)

Students in grades 1–6 can earn a FREE book through the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program!

How it works:

  1. Read any 8 books.
  2. Record them in the Summer Reading Journal.
  3. Bring the completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store.
  4. Choose a free book from the eligible selections.

Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Adventure

The Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Adventure is open to youth and adults.

Participation is easy:

  1. Register for the Summer Reading Adventure.
  2. Earn virtual badges by:
  • Reading or listening to books
  • Reading for 20–30 minutes
  • Completing activities
  • Or a combination of all three

Depending on age, participants earn 10–15 virtual badges.

Once reading goals are completed, visit your local library branch to receive prizes.

Printed reading logs will be available in branches and online beginning June 17.
