Principals' Update

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Can you believe we are already in the final week of school? One thing is certain: we are finishing the year with plenty of fun, celebration, and school spirit. From our wonderful music concerts (thank you to Ms. Canape, Mr. Funderburk, and Ms. Stover) to the Talent Show (thank you to Mrs. Turner and Ms. Hinders), to Field Day (thank you to Mr. Dowling, Ms. Hinders, our amazing volunteers, and our PTA for lunch) as well as the many classroom celebrations planned by our staff, our students have had so many meaningful opportunities to celebrate together. These special events would not be possible without the energy and commitment of our school community. Thank you for helping us create such wonderful memories for our Eagles.

We are also excited to celebrate our 6th graders as they prepare for middle school. During our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Tuesday evening, we will recognize their hard work, growth, and leadership. We are incredibly proud of them and look forward to sending them off in a special way.

Even though the year is coming to a close, we are not finished yet. We still have plenty of learning and fun ahead through next Wednesday, and it is very important that all students attend every day so we can end the year strong together.

Finally, thank you to all of our families for your partnership throughout this school year. We truly could not do this important work without your support, dedication, and collaboration. Let's finish strong!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Tim Scesney, Asst. Principal

Holly Sims, Asst. Principal

Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services

Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other services.

Contact CSB Entry and Referral to get started by calling 703-383-8500 or emailing csb@fairfaxcounty.gov

Additional Mental Health Resources

FCPS has resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional support can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number.

Recent reports have shared an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts.

And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.

📅FCPS Calendar Survey

FCPS values your input as we plan future school calendars. On Friday, June 5, all caregivers and FCPS staff will receive an email from noreply@fcps.edu containing a unique link to complete the FCPS Calendar Survey.

Your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to share your priorities and perspectives by Monday, June 22, at 11:59 p.m.

Your individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with school staff or used in any way that identifies you or your student. Only aggregate, summary-level results will be reported to the Fairfax County School Board.

If you do not receive a link to the survey or have technical difficulties completing the survey, please contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation

🌞Summer Resources Help Students Stay Curious, Healthy, and Busy

The FCPS Summer Resource Guide has activities and tips on a variety of subjects and interests, from camps and activities to health and safety resources.

Additionally, the FCPS Summer Learning webpage offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until August. Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce concepts, and stay engaged!

Be sure to check back over the summer, as more resources may be added.

Student Testing Results Coming Soon

Through June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, you can view a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.

Most scores are available in SIS ParentVUE. Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families

Websites for each test provide report translations and help with understanding test results. Please contact our front office with any testing questions or for additional information about how our school and teachers use test results to support student success.
