Message from Mr. Greata
As the 2025–2026 school year comes to a close, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our incredible teachers and staff. Your dedication, passion, and hard work have made this a phenomenal year for our students. To our families, thank you for your continued partnership and support. We hope you all have a safe, relaxing, and wonderful summer break.
Before we head into the summer, we have several incredible student achievements to celebrate from this past year. Please join me in congratulating Logan Lee, Mayu Zuniga, and Lucas Shen for winning third place at the Fairfax Area High School Shark Tank Technology Challenge. They developed N1 Glasses, which are augmented reality glasses that use sound localization algorithms to mimic human spatial awareness, designed to aid deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. We are incredibly proud of their creativity and empathy-driven innovation.
We also want to recognize an outstanding group of students who have been selected for the prestigious Academic Governor’s School Program: Arya Desai, Kyle Fernandez, Nicholas Kim, Nicolas Lee, Maire McGinley, Joelle Rice, Parnika Urs, Grace Verne, and Mayu Zuniga. This program provides advanced learners with academic, visual, and performing arts opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. Our students will engage in hands-on research, field studies, and small-group instruction while working alongside professional mentors, and we know they will represent Woodson beautifully.
Congratulations to Ryan Hembree, who was awarded the 2026 West Point Leadership and Ethics Conference Scholarship. Ryan participated in a rigorous workshop modeled after the U.S. Military Academy’s ethical decision-making framework, which is designed to cultivate leaders of character. Out of 200 talented delegates, Ryan was one of only six students to receive a scholarship.
We also want to congratulate Ethan Lee on being awarded the Laura Ashley Piper Scholarship! This annual honor recognizes an FCPS student who excels both in and out of the classroom—a description Ethan fits perfectly with his exceptional 4.55 GPA and dedicated community service organizing local food drives.
As you look ahead to the summer and begin planning for the upcoming school year, please note that our main offices will remain open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM each day during the break. Looking forward to the fall, our first day of school will be Monday, August 24th, and we will host our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 17th.
Have a fantastic summer, Cavaliers! We look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for another great year this August.

Counselor Corner
We presented our Senior Prep Lesson to the Class of 2027 to highlight what they should be doing this summer to prepare for senior year. We introduced the Senior Roadmap & Next Steps document, a helpful guide of next steps and planning tips no matter their path after graduation. They should also be familiarizing themselves with the Senior Padlet, finalizing their list of 5-7 colleges (and deciding on deadlines), working on essays, visiting colleges, and preparing to complete the Common App when it opens Aug. 1. The College Padlet has many great resources, like testing info, essay-writing support, and college research. This and many specialty padlets are located on the College & Career Center Padlet on the Woodson Student Services padlet.
Students in need of credit recovery due to failing a core course may register for free. Please let your school counselor know once you register for a summer class.
The deadline has passed for summer self-directed Econ/Personal Finance and for summer online campus courses. If you already registered and need to keep your FCPS laptop, please complete the opt-in form by June 13.
Congrats 2026 Grads! We are so proud of you and will miss you very much. You will always be a Woodson Cavalier!
We encourage all families to review the Student Services Padlet over the summer for helpful resources. Keep in mind that school counselors do not work over the summer, so if you receive an auto-reply this summer, we will respond when we return in August. It’s a pleasure to serve our community, and we wish all families a happy & safe summer!

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1
On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.
This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.
High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.
Go Paperless!
Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
