Cubbie News
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
Can you believe we have just five days left of the school year? The energy in the building is exciting as we head into this final stretch. Looking back at everything our students have achieved this year fills us with immense pride, and we are anchoring the final days of the year with some of our absolute favorite annual traditions.
We kicked off our end-of-year celebrations with an incredibly exciting Field Day! The weather cooperated, the team spirit was unmatched, and it was pure joy to see our students collaborating, competing, and laughing together outside. A thank you to our PE staff, teachers, sixth graders, and wonderful parent volunteers who made this day such a big success.
On Monday, we welcomed back our former students—now high school seniors—for our Grad Walk. Watching these soon-to-be high school graduates march through our hallways in their caps and gowns was incredibly moving. It was a beautiful full-circle moment that gave our current students a glimpse of their own bright futures and allowed our staff to celebrate the incredible milestones of our alumni.
Our hallways are about to be filled with music! We are putting the final touches on our upcoming Band, Strings, and Chorus concerts. Our student musicians have been practicing tirelessly all year, and we cannot wait for them to take the stage. Please join us to celebrate their hard work and remarkable musical growth.
Finally, we are preparing to officially recognize and celebrate our sixth graders as they get ready to move on to middle school. While we are sad to see them leave our halls, we are incredibly excited for the next chapter of their educational journey. They have shown tremendous leadership this year, and we know they are ready to conquer the new challenges ahead.
Thank you, families, for your partnership, support, and dedication throughout this entire school year. Let’s make these final days safe, memorable, and full of joy!
Warm Regards,
Melissa Miller - Principal
Nausheen Haider - Assistant Principal

Medication Pick-up Information
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 1:25 pm, student dismissal time, on the last day of school, June 17. Medications left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. Medications may also be picked up before June 17 during school hours.
If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).
Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. An authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. If you have any question regarding which authorization form to use, please reach out to the health room at 703-633-7510 or email Yina Lee, PHN at ylee3@fcps.edu.

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.
As of June 10, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has increased to 9.2%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can continue to have an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.
Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.
If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE. Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.
If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact us so we can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources.
PTA News
Dear Cub Run Families,
As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to take a moment to thank our incredible Cub Run community for the support, time, and energy you continue to give to our students, staff, and PTA. Because of you, we create memorable experiences and opportunities that make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies.
As many of our current board members prepare to complete their final terms over the next two years, we are looking for parents and caregivers, and teachers and staff, who may be interested in becoming more involved with the PTA — whether in a leadership role, supporting role, or simply learning more about how our PTA works behind the scenes.
Specifically, we are currently seeking:
-
A parent interested in working alongside our current PTA President during the 2026–2027 school year. Our President’s term concludes in 2027, and having someone work directly with, and collaborate with Lindsay throughout the year would help create a smooth and successful transition for the future of our PTA.
-
New VP of Volunteers, as the upcoming year will be Steph and Dan’s final term in the position.
-
New co-Secretary, as Megan’s term will be concluding after the upcoming school year. This is a shared position, and the second volunteer in the role has already committed to another two-year term. Responsibilities currently include helping manage our PTA newsletter and PTA website, making this a great opportunity for someone who would like to join an established team and share responsibilities.
In addition to leadership opportunities, we are also looking for volunteers to help lead and support some of our favorite Cub Run events and programs, including:
- Ice Skating Chair
- Spirit Nights Chair (fundraisers/sponsorships at local restaurants)
- Yearbook Chair
- Cub Run a Thon Committee
We are also excited to introduce a new board position for the upcoming school year:
6th Grade Liaison
We are looking for a parent — or small group of parents — to help make our rising 6th graders’ final year at Cub Run extra special! This role will include organizing and planning favorite traditions such as Volleyball Night and coordinating 6th grade fundraising activities. Let's make the last year for our oldest Cubbies one they'll always remember!
It is also important to share that a PTA can only continue with an active board and volunteers willing to fill key positions. Without enough members stepping into leadership roles, our PTA could eventually face the possibility of disbanding. We know that would be deeply disappointing for our school community, as the PTA plays such an important role in supporting school events, enriching experiences, family engagement opportunities, and special traditions that help make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies. Every role — big or small — truly helps keep these opportunities available for our students and families.
We know that stepping into a PTA role can sometimes feel intimidating, but you are never expected to do it alone. Our current board members are happy to support, guide, and help new volunteers learn the ropes. Many of our best ideas and strongest programs have come from parents who simply decided to give it a try.
Whether you have a little time or a lot, your involvement truly makes a difference.
If you are interested in learning more about any of these opportunities or would simply like to have a conversation about how you can help, we would love to hear from you!
President - Lindsay Reiner: president@cubrunpta.org
VP of Membership - Theresa Hassett: membership@cubrunpta.org
VP of Volunteer - Dan & Steph Sherwood: volunteer@cubrunpta.org
Secretary - Megan Oris and Amy Burke: secretary@cubrunpta.org
Treasurer - Subrata Chakraborty: treasurer@cubrunpta.org
Thank you for continuing to help make Cub Run such an amazing community for our students and families.
Warmly,
Your Cub Run Elementary PTA
