🐝Principal Reflections from the Hive | Celebrating Growth, Honoring Milestones, and Looking Ahead

As we approach the final days of the school year, this week provided many opportunities to celebrate the growth, achievements, and bright futures of our students. From promotion ceremonies and special celebrations to planning for next year, there was a great deal of joy throughout our school community.

We began the week with important work focused on supporting every learner. Our staff engaged in MTSS Core Team meetings, class placement discussions, and Summit testing for our multilingual learners as we continued planning thoughtfully for the year ahead. I also had the opportunity to meet with our new Instructional Coach, Christopher Fitzgerald, who will officially join the Herndon Elementary team in July. We are excited to welcome his expertise and leadership as we continue strengthening instruction and student support.

One of the week's most memorable moments took place on Tuesday as we welcomed back former Herndon Bees and members of the Class of 2026 for our annual Legacy Walk. Joined by students from Westfield High School, South Lakes High School, and Herndon High School, our graduating seniors walked through the halls where many of their educational journeys began. Current Herndon Bees lined the hallways with cheers, smiles, and high-fives, creating a powerful reminder of the impact of public education and the bright futures ahead for our students.

We also celebrated important milestones for our youngest and oldest learners. Congratulations to the students in Mrs. Seaton's and Ms. Mufti's PreK classes who participated in their promotion ceremonies this week. We are equally proud of our sixth-grade students, whose promotion ceremony and celebration highlighted their accomplishments and readiness for the next chapter of their educational journey.

While the summer heat required us to adjust some plans, our students, staff, and families embraced the changes and helped create memorable celebrations filled with pride and joy. Field Day was another highlight of the week. A special thank you goes to our Specials Team for their flexibility and creativity in quickly adjusting plans and bringing the excitement indoors when weather conditions changed. Our students had a wonderful time participating in activities that promoted teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun.

This week also reinforced the importance of family voice and partnership. I had the privilege of joining our Family Liaison, Mrs. Mendoza Alvarado,  and Herndon Elementary parents at the FCPS Gatehouse Administration Center to participate in a Multilingual Learner Parent Panel. Their thoughtful perspectives helped senior leaders better understand how FCPS can continue strengthening support for the more than 35,000 multilingual learners across our division. We are grateful to the families who shared their experiences and represented our community so well.

Throughout the week, we celebrated students who demonstrated academic growth and achievement through our SOL celebrations and recognized multilingual learners during our WIDA celebration. These moments reflect the dedication of our students, families, and staff and align closely with FCPS's commitment to ensuring every student feels supported, challenged, and prepared for future success.

As the school year comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude for our students, staff, families, PTA, and community partners who make Herndon Elementary such a special place. Thank you for your partnership, support, and commitment to our shared mission of helping every Bee learn, grow, and thrive.

Have a wonderful weekend, and congratulations to all of our students and families celebrating important milestones during this season of transition and accomplishment.

In Your Service,

Dr. Monika Vereb
