Weekly Wave: June 8

Principal's Message

Dear Lake Anne Families,

It’s hard to believe that June is here and that the finish line for the 2025–2026 school year is in sight! As we enter these final weeks, this is a great opportunity to talk with your children about the importance of finishing the year strong. Developing perseverance and maintaining focus through the end of a task are valuable skills that will continue to serve our Dolphins well in the years ahead.

While there are many exciting events coming up, including Field Day and end-of-year celebrations, high-quality teaching and learning will continue through the last day of school. We encourage all students to be present and engaged each day as we make the most of our remaining time together. Our current chronic absenteeism rate is 11.4%, and we would love to continue making progress toward our school goal of less than 10%. Every day matters, and your support in ensuring students attend school regularly makes a meaningful difference. Please remember that attendance will be taken every day through June 17.

We greatly appreciate your partnership and support as we balance meaningful learning experiences with opportunities to celebrate a successful school year. Thank you for helping make Lake Anne such a special community.

Warmly,

Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal
Mrs. Valencia Chenier, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Leslie Grumbach, Assistant Principal

🌱 Garden Gratitude! 🌱

Garden Donations

A special thank you to Mary Teague, our volunteer Master Gardener, for her generous donation of a picnic table and shade umbrella to our school garden. These additions help create a more welcoming and comfortable outdoor learning space for our students and staff.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Lake Anne PTA for their generous donation of two storage sheds for our edible garden project. Thanks to their support, we now have a safe and convenient place to store garden tools and supplies right next to the garden.

We are grateful for the community partnerships and volunteer support that continue to help our garden grow and provide meaningful learning opportunities for our Dolphins!

If your student is enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form may be used for the summer program. Parents will need to pick up the medication and deliver it to the summer learning site.

This form is required for any prescription, or over-the-counter medication. Please refer to information about medication procedures on the back of the form. All prescription medications must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider and match the orders on the medication authorization.

Lunch Balances

Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance

It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.

If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.

Language Arts Updates

📚 Halfway Through Exploring the Earth in Language Arts 📚

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 8 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored the seasons, the solar system, and the impact that natural processes and systems have on society.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What has been your favorite reading from this unit and why?
  • Activity: Fill a clear cup with different layers of materials (sand, soil, small pebbles) to represent Earth’s layers. Pour water on top and see how it moves through the layers.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
