Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

As we approach the final days of the school year, we want to take a moment to look back at the incredible moments that make our school community so special, and look forward to the celebrations ahead.

First, a huge shout-out to our PE teachers (Mr. Challacombe and Ms. Holloway) and all of our incredible volunteers for putting on a fantastic, fun-filled Field Day last week! Events like this simply aren't possible without the energy and dedication of our community, and we are so grateful to all of our parent volunteers who helped make it such a memorable day for our students.

A massive thank you to our wonderful ESOL team (Ms. Avgousti, Ms Gaunt, Ms. Hoover, and Ms. Machler) and our entire staff for putting together such an incredible International Night! It was breathtaking to see our classrooms transformed into vibrant museums, allowing us to learn about so many of the diverse countries represented by our amazing students. A special thank you to our PTA for their support in organizing and putting on such a big event as well! Thank you to every family who attended and shared in this celebration of our community's rich culture.

We are also eagerly looking forward to honoring our 6th graders as they prepare to move on to middle school. We will be celebrating their hard work, growth, and leadership during our upcoming 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony tomorrow morning. We are so proud of them and can't wait to give them the send-off they deserve.

While the year is winding down, we are not done yet! We still have lots of fun and learning planned through next Wednesday, and it is incredibly important that all students attend every single day so we can finish the year strong together.

Finally, thank you to all of our families for your incredible partnership this school year. We could not do this work without your support, dedication, and collaboration.

Have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing summer!

Sincerely,

Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal

Fond Farewells

As the school year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the wonderful staff members who will be leaving Shrevewood Elementary at the end of the year. Whether they are moving on to new professional adventures, relocating, or entering retirement, each of them has left an indelible mark on our school. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, energy, and dedication to our students, and we wish them the absolute best in their next chapters!

It is with mixed emotions that we bid a fond farewell to the following Shrevewood staff members:

  • Allyson Brink, School Information Assistant
  • Yvonne Claytor, PreK Teacher
  • Madalin Flynn, Instructional Assistant
  • Rhonda Gibson, School Psychologist
  • Caroline Haymans, 2nd Grade Teacher
  • Abigail Malone, 4th Grade Teacher
  • Clover Marvel, 4th Grade Teacher
  • Coreen Pinkerton, Kindergarten Teacher
  • Amanda Winfield, Art Teacher

As we head into summer, a few additional staffing changes may occur. We are already nearly fully staffed for the upcoming school year and will keep the community updated on any adjustments. Stay tuned later this summer when we will officially introduce our newest staff members!

Congratulations to Coreen Pinkerton!

Among our departures is a truly bittersweet milestone as our beloved kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Coreen Pinkerton, is retiring after 23 incredible years in Fairfax County Public Schools.

We are immensely grateful for the profound impact Mrs. Pinkerton has had on our school community. Even if your child never had the privilege of sitting in her classroom, her warmth, kindness, and dedication have positively shaped the lives of so many families across our community.

While we will miss her presence in the hallways, we are thrilled for what lies ahead. We wish her the absolute best in her well-deserved retirement and know she is looking forward to enjoying more time with her family—especially her grandson!

Please join us in thanking Mrs. Pinkerton for 23 years of heart and dedication, and in wishing all of our departing staff a wonderful transition.

SWES Library Updates

It has been an amazing year of checking out from the SWES library.  The library circulated 21,537 books this year – wow!  At this time, all books are due back to the library.  Please help your student check at home to locate all library books and return them.  SWES library books will have an FCPS barcode in the upper-right corner of the back of the book, plus a label on the spine, plus either a sticker on the back or a stamp inside the cover saying Shrevewood ES.  We want to get 100% of our books back – thank you for your help on this!  Happy reading!

Summer Reading

Reading over the summer is a fantastic way for students to keep their literacy skills fresh, build empathy, and explore new worlds.

Today, Shrevewood ES welcomed visitors from the Tysons-Pimmit Public Library. All students got a sneak peek at some incredible books and learned about this year's FCPL 2026 Summer Reading Adventure: "Unearth A Story!" 🦖⛱️

You can find all of these titles and more at your local library. If you are looking for fresh reading inspiration, check out these local recommendations:

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders

In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Immunization appointments are available. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

STAY CONNECTED WITH THE PTA

Family Resource

Summer is full of opportunities for learning, exploration, and fun. This article from NWEA shares practical resources and activities families can use at home, while traveling, or throughout the community to keep children engaged and learning all summer long. Read more here!

Procedures for Joining Your Child for Lunch

We are excited to open our cafeteria for parents and guardians to join their children for lunch at school! We know how much you value connecting with your child, and this is a great chance to share a special moment during the school day.

If you'd like to have lunch with your child, please follow these steps:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Wear the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your child(ren).
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your visitor sticker.
  • Please don't visit the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue without interruption for our students.
  • Please do not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do not bring any food to share with other children due to safety protocols and allergies.

Cell Phone and Smart Watch Policy

Please remind your child that FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:

  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy.

Student Birthday Policy

As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.

Attendance

Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.

Parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
