When a group of students drives recklessly around a school parking lot and T-bones a school bus full of other students, causing many horrible injuries, this is a story that would make the news. On May 22 at Falls Church Academy this incident became the mock scenario for the 4th Annual Mass Casualty Drill.
The MCI, as it's known, is an annual cross-curricular academy-wide mass casualty simulation incorporating all Falls Church Academy disciplines and simulated communication across the Academy criminal justice, world language, pre-hospital and in-hospital medical career disciplines. This exercise, meant to build real-world experiences, strengthened communication across disciplines, prepared students for healthcare and public safety careers and was created to develop students critical thinking under pressure.
Fairfax County CERT Moulage Team prepared student victims with life like injuries to aid in the realistic nature of the scenarios.
Criminal justice students make mock arrests at the MCI.
Biotechnology Foundations students take mock crime scene evidence to analyze markers.
Pharmacy students processed mock medications for the injured patients.
EMT students care for injured victims.
Dental students cared for this victim who "bit their tongue off" in mock accident.
Nursing students assist victims with injuries.
Falls Church Academy is so proud of all students but there is a certain affinity to Jeremy Chao who has taken two Academy classes in succession. Jeremy is a graduating senior and off to great places. Please see more of his story here.
Students in the Dental Careers classes provided dental education activities for students in the Physical Disabilities Services programs, known as the POD. POD students learned about adaptive instruments to help with oral health and good nutrition. In addition, POD students experience the dental chairs and instruments used in dental offices.
