Congratulations to seven Justice Wolves for receiving scholarships last week at the end of year Educate Fairfax event! We're proud of you!

Calming Classroom Initiative

calming classroom

This year, we received a grant for just under $2,000 from Educate Fairfax for Justice to implement a “Calming Classrooms” initiative! This allowed us to purchase a variety of fidgets and kinetic sand for students to use in their classrooms. Just under 70 staff members have materials so far, and we were able to procure materials for more in the future as well! Our goal is to help students be able to emotionally regulate without having to miss instructional time, while also helping them to calm down during stressful activities (such as test preparation). Pictured using the Calming Classrooms materials are teacher Mrs. Futato as well as students Liya Yilma, Houda Chakir, Ghelila Micael, Amira El Marhfri Belrhiti, and Jackeline Cabrera Lucero.

Hands-On Dissections

dissection

Last week, the Anatomy Science Team rolled up their sleeves and dove into hands-on dissections! Students explored anatomy by dissecting pigs and sheep's brain and heart. Through these engaging lab experiences, teachers sparked curiosity, teamwork, and scientific discovery in our students. It was an exciting week of learning, collaboration, and real-world application in action!

Public Health Ambassador Program

pha

On Thursday, May 28th, students participating in the Public Health Youth Ambassador Program attended the PULSE Event: Public Health in Action.

During this engaging experience, students joined professionals from the Fairfax County Health Department for a series of interactive, hands-on sessions. These sessions highlighted key areas of public health, including Emergency Preparedness & Response, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, and Community Engagement & Outreach.

Students had the opportunity to hear directly from emergency responders and public health professionals, gaining valuable insight into the real-world impact of this field. Many were surprised and impressed to learn that public health extends far beyond doctors and nurses. The field also includes roles such as food inspectors, epidemiologists, pool inspectors, and community outreach specialists—all working together to protect and improve community health.

School Board Adopts Fiscal Year 2027 Approved Budget

On May 21, the Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Approved Budget, continuing FCPS’ commitment to sustaining excellence by prioritizing competitive compensation and strategic investments that support student success.

The adopted budget reflects the division’s ongoing efforts to navigate a challenging fiscal environment shaped in part by chronic state underfunding and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, the budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year. Read about the FY 2027 Budget.

Calendar Reminders

June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

In the month of June, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. We stand with those facing an ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. This Pride Month, we reaffirm and uphold the dignity of LGBTQIA+ people. Each individual in our school community should feel valued for who they are. Visit our LGBTQIA+ Student Resources and Supports webpage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

June is Caribbean American Heritage Month

FCPS celebrates the rich diversity and honors the many contributions of immigrants of Caribbean heritage to our nation during the month of June. Weekly Reminders

Family Information Line Available in Nine Languages

Parents/caregivers who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese may call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS. View the list of phone numbers.

Keeping Children Safe Online

The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost

Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes; on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring; essay editing; and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Learn more about online tutoring with Varsity Tutors.

No-Cost Mental Online Therapy for All High School Students

Is your student experiencing anxiety, behavior changes, or challenges with peer and family relationships? Do they seem withdrawn or uninterested in their usual hobbies?

Parents/caregivers can refer their children for free weekly therapy with a licensed therapist through Hazel Health. Visit the FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for information about this service.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
