Roadrunner Rundown

May 28, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

If the school year were a baseball game we would be in the last inning! Next week is already June and the end is in sight. SOL testing (other than make-ups) for our students in grade 3-6 has concluded. We are very proud of their hard work and resilience. We have class picnics, our spring concert and field days to look forward to. Teachers are finishing up the 4th quarter curriculum and there is important and engaging material for students to explore before heading off for summer break. The days are full and we hope you will join us in encouraging your children to soak in the fun and work hard to the final day.

Have a great week!

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

2026 Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta

The Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta (hosted by the Reston Museum) is a fun, one-of-a-kind event that has quickly become a beloved Reston tradition. Each year, this event draws growing crowds of residents, businesses, and visitors from across the Greater Washington, D.C. area. Thousands gather at Lake Anne Plaza to cheer on their favorite teams as creativity and teamwork take center stage on the water.

The Reston Museum is excited to offer FCPS elementary schools the opportunity to participate as sponsored teams on a first-come, first-served basis, with the $50 entry fee waived. To participate, a school must form a team to design, build, and decorate a life-size cardboard boat that represents their school community. On race day, teams will take to the water in timed heats, rowing out to a designated buoy and back to the docks at Lake Anne Plaza. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring STEAM learning to life; encouraging creativity, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving in a truly memorable way. Please email Karlen Lehman (kslehman@fcps.edu) if you are interested in being part of an MRES team.

End-of-Year Staff Appreciation (GiftCrowd)

As the school year comes to a close, many families look for ways to thank the incredible teachers and staff at MRES. GiftCrowd offers a simple and optional way to share your appreciation with individual staff members or contribute to group gifts.

Some staff members are grouped together as teams, making it easy to recognize those who work closely behind the scenes to support our students every day. Every recipient will receive your message along with the gift, and all contributions remain completely private.

Deadline: GiftCrowd will close on June 14 at 11:59 pm ET. After that time, gifts will be automatically sent to all staff and teachers.

If you would like to participate, consider this your friendly “do it before the end-of-school chaos begins” reminder! Questions? Contact Monica at president@marshallroadpta.org.

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight

Hooray for Ms. Feinberg, our amazing school finance assistant. Ms. Feinberg has been at Marshall Road for 15 years. Fun fact: one of her first days at MRES was in 2011 when the earthquake struck Northern Virginia!

When asked her favorite thing about Marshall Road, Ms. Feinberg said, “What I love most about working at Marshall Road is the strong sense of community — the dedication of our parents, the generosity of the PTA through its volunteerism and support of classrooms, projects, and events, and the camaraderie among the staff along with the encouragement from our administration. I have a bit of a commute from Springfield each day, but it’s absolutely worth it when you love where you’re going.”

In her spare time Ms. Feinberg loves seeing musicals wherever they’re performed — on Broadway, in community theaters, in high school auditoriums, or even the wonderful productions staged right here in our own gym!

Ms. Feinberg has lived in Fairfax County her entire life, and all of her children still live nearby so she gets to spend time with them and her six grandchildren every week. We are so glad Ms. Feinberg is part of the Roadrunner family!

Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance

It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer. If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.
