May has been a meaningful month at our school as we came together to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month.
During this month, our building focused on activities designed to help students pause, reset, and focus on their well-being. We kicked things off with some incredibly popular therapy dog visits, giving classes the option to drop by so students who were interested could spend some calming, hands-on time with our four-legged friends (see Caspian picture, the gentle giant Leonberger who visited us!).
Staff even got in on the action, with a repeat visit for from Caspian for staff, and a “Zen Den” set up by Employee Wellness available during lunches one day in May for educators to get some needed pampering and resources.
Our daily morning announcements in May focused on practical ways we can all take good care of ourselves and look out for one another. Throughout the month our school was filled with uplifting music with positive messages during transition times to keep spirits high between classes.
Finally, during Teacher Advisory (TA) periods, students got creative and crafted their own custom fidget items to help manage stress and boost focus. We are so proud of how thoughtfully our students engaged with these activities, and we encourage you to ask them which event was their favorite! As always, we encourage students who may need support with anything to come by to visit their school counselor to help with problem solving, resource seeking, or just venting when needed!

Does your student need to use their KJMS laptop for a summer program? Fill out this form to let us know! If so, your student will not need to turn in the laptop during the last week of school.
The laptop and school issued charger must be returned to the KJMS Main Office once their summer program is complete, no later than Monday, August 3rd.
Any questions, please email KJMSTechOffice@fcps.edu.
If your student will be transferring to another school next year, please take a moment to complete the SY 2026-2027 Student Intention Form and email it to Ms. Holmes, our Registrar, at aholmes@fcps.edu.
If your child will be returning to our school or attending one of our feeder high schools as planned, there’s nothing you need to do—no form is required.
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room, please picked up by the end of the school day Wednesday June 17th (early release).
We have emergency albuterol and epinephrine in the clinic if needed, if you’re able to please schedule with smjohnson@fcps.edu or rbasile@fcps.edu so we can have paperwork ready.
Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school before dismissal. Unfortunately, we must discard any medications left behind after June 17th.
To ensure efficiency please email smjohnson@fcps.edu & rbasile@fcps.edu when you plan to arrive for pick up or if you would like us to dispose of your students medication, 703-934-2410.

On May 21, the Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Approved Budget, continuing FCPS’ commitment to sustaining excellence by prioritizing competitive compensation and strategic investments that support student success.
The adopted budget reflects the division’s ongoing efforts to navigate a challenging fiscal environment shaped in part by chronic state underfunding and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, the budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year. Read about the FY 2027 Budget.
