Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Families,

I hope you enjoyed a meaningful Memorial Day weekend with family and friends. As we begin the final stretch of the school year, we pause to honor and remember the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Although it was a shorter week for students, it was a busy and productive one for our staff. On Tuesday, I spent the day collaborating with district leaders and school teams on math pathways and advanced academic opportunities to ensure we continue providing rigorous and engaging learning experiences for all students.

On Thursday, I joined a Carnegie Learning representative for classroom walkthroughs and was impressed by the level of student discourse, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking taking place in our classrooms. Our students continue to demonstrate deep understanding and confidence as they explain their reasoning and engage with challenging tasks. Throughout the week, we also continued classroom observations, interviewed candidates for teaching and counseling positions, and focused on planning for next school year.

Friday began with a celebration of our multilingual learners and the remarkable growth they have achieved this year. We are proud of the students who have met the criteria to exit English language support services and grateful to our staff for their dedication to student success.

I also had the opportunity to visit a neighboring elementary school to observe Enhanced Core Reading and English (ECRE), a literacy program that will be implemented in grades 1 and 2 next year. The division has seen strong results in pilot schools, and we are excited to begin teacher training this summer as we prepare to bring this additional literacy support to our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we finish the school year strong.

With Our Bees in Mind,

Dr. Monika Vereb

Superintendent Dr. Reid Talks about her Visit to Herndon ES

Kindergarten teacher in her classroom with students

I visited Herndon Elementary School, where I was welcomed by Principal Dr. Monika Vereb and her administrative team. We first stopped by Brittany Portugal’s kindergarten classroom, where students were learning about the weather by singing “The Weather Song” to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” I couldn’t believe that I had that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day. ;>) We then visited Rachel Barranco’s first-grade classroom, where students were working on letter sounds with support from teacher Alaina Bear. In the third-grade classroom of Anisha Goveas-Foti and Lyida Gough, students were learning about nouns and practicing their writing skills. My final classroom visit was to Pamela Galyean’s third-grade classroom, where students were receiving small-group reading instruction alongside Reading Specialist Ashley Tingler. Early literacy remains a primary focus for us as our strategic plan outlines, I appreciate everyone’s efforts on these important skills, it matters.

Dr. Reid and Dr. Vereb in construction site with workers

Herndon Elementary is undergoing a major renovation that will modernize the existing school building, provide updated amenities, and fully upgrade the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The renovation will also expand the building by approximately 51,000 square feet and feature a new two-story addition, a new library, an expanded cafeteria and kitchen, an enlarged administrative suite with a new main entrance vestibule, and additional site improvements. I was able to tour the construction site with FCPS Design and Construction Director Scott Eschbach, Principal Vereb, and other members of the Design and Construction team. Construction on the new addition is progressing nicely and is scheduled to open for students in fall 2026. I can’t wait to see the finished product! Go Bees!!

Summer Safety Tips from our FCPH School Nurse

Image test says Heat Awareness, there is a sun with a sad face sweating and needle on red on a thermometer.

Summer is here and we will be feeling the heat for the next few months. On extremely hot days, these tips will help you stay cool and safe:

1.  Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

2.  Stay inside and out of the heat, if possible. Save the yard work for another day or time.

3.  Visit indoor locations during operating hours to stay cool.

4.  Know the symptoms of heat-related illness. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call or text 9-1-1.

5.  Never leave children, older adults or pets alone in a car.

6.  Fans create air flow but give a false sense of comfort since they do not lower body temperature. Stay hydrated and take other steps to get cool.

•  You can help protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat!

Older adults are more prone to heat-related health problems. If you are an older adult or a caregiver to an older adult, ensure that you stay informed for health and safety updates and seeking medical care when needed.

•  Infants and children should be dressed in loose, lightweight clothing and should never be left in a parked car even if the windows are open.

School-based outdoor activities during extreme heat conditions for athletic teams and events are monitored closely. County departments that host summer camps also monitor conditions.

•  Individuals who are on prescription medications may have difficulty communicating what they are experiencing, or their medications may make the effect of extreme heat more pronounced.

•  People with chronic medical conditions may struggle to cope or recover quickly from extreme heat.

People who work outdoors are more likely to become dehydrated and get heat-related illnesses. Encourage outdoor co-workers to drink plenty of water, ask if tasks can be scheduled earlier or later to avoid extreme heat and take frequent breaks to cool down and hydrate. Workers and supervisors should be able to recognize symptoms of heat stress.
