Dear Churchill Road families,

What a whirlwind of activity the past few weeks have been. Our SOL testing has taken place and students are focusing on continued learning over the next few weeks. Our younger grade students have begun planting seeds and sprouts in our garden beds (see below). It will be so exciting for the students to see the mature plants and vegetables when they return to school in the fall.

Recently:

  • Our spring strings concerts and band concerts were held for parents and community members; the students all performed their best, showcasing what they had learned throughout the year.  Our performing arts department always goes the extra mile to ensure students have a balanced experience alongside their academics.
  • Our PTA backyard BBQ was a huge success.  Thank you to the PTA for organizing this fun event.  We were excited to showcase the new outdoor shade and replacement of the picnic tables.  We are looking forward to celebrating the finished outdoor area at the beginning of 26/27.
  • Our kindergarteners hosted their “Donuts with Grownups” event, entertaining guests with song.  The students have grown so much over the past year, and having the opportunity to hear all about what they learned was so exciting.

Looking ahead,

  • Our spring chorus concert is Tuesday, June 2
  • First graders will demonstrate their literary and musical skills during their annual Reading Rodeo.
  • Ancient Civilizations Day is the culmination of third graders' study of various cultures.

We look forward to finishing the year strong and setting our students up for a successful 2026-2027 school year.  We cannot thank you enough for your partnerships and ideas to ensure we have the best experience possible for your children.  We are so grateful for you all.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pierson-Barr and Mr. Kilpatrick

Get2Green planting

These past few weeks grades K-3 have worked hard to plant seeds and sprouts in our outdoor garden beds. They helped plant sunflowers, pumpkins, vegetables, lettuce, perennial flowers, and strawberries. We are all excited to watch these sprouts grow over the summer and into next year.

Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance

It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

💊Student Medication Pick Up - Clinic Reminder

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school, June 17th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.  Please contact the front office if you have questions.

benchmark

📚 Halfway Through Exploring the Earth in Language Arts 📚

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 8 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored the seasons, the solar system, and the impact that natural processes and systems have on society.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What has been your favorite reading from this unit and why?
  • Activity: Fill a clear cup with different layers of materials (sand, soil, small pebbles) to represent Earth’s layers. Pour water on top and see how it moves through the layers.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services

Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other services.

Additional Mental Health Resources

FCPS has resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional support can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number.

Recent reports have shared an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts.

And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.
