Upcoming Roofing Dates (June 1st - 5th)

Dear Lees Corner Families,

As our school renovation continues, we want to provide you with an important update regarding the next phase of work. Our necessary roofing project on the current construction of the West Addition is tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 1st to Friday, June 5th.

We understand that roofing work, particularly the application of waterproofing materials like hot asphalt, can unfortunately generate noticeable odors. We want to assure you that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and our Design and Construction (D&C) team are implementing rigorous safety measures to protect all students, staff, and visitors:

Safety First: Roofing activities are never conducted directly over occupied areas. This specific work is occurring on the roof of the new additions, which are currently unoccupied by students and staff. As shared before, construction zones are clearly cordoned off with fencing and signage, and all community members must keep out of these areas.

Odor Mitigation: Mechanical systems adjacent to the work will be monitored and shut down as necessary to limit odors from entering the building. Furthermore, contractors will be using an odor suppressant (not just a scented masking agent) that acts at the molecular level to substantially reduce the release of specific compounds from the asphalt. For more information on the odor suppressant please see this PDF.

Onsite Supervision: An FCPS Design & Construction representative will be onsite whenever the contractor is working to ensure protocols are strictly followed, including keeping project materials away from air handling unit intakes. All materials used are required to be asbestos-free.

Understanding Roofing Odors

Per FCPS Design & Construction, roofing odors do not indicate a harmful exposure. Some compounds in the asphalt have very low odor thresholds—meaning you can smell them at concentrations far below the levels associated with adverse health effects.

While some individuals may experience temporary and unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, watering eyes, or nausea, these are short-term effects that can be relieved by seeking fresh air. FCPS D&C can confirm that long-term health consequences are not a result of the levels of exposure found inside the buildings during these projects.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the main office at 703-227-3500. As needed, we will continue to field your concerns promptly to the right contacts.Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we complete this essential phase of our renovation.

Sincerely,

VaRonica Sloan & Jennifer Hutchinson

School Board Adopts Fiscal Year 2027 Approved Budget

On May 21, the Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Approved Budget, continuing FCPS’ commitment to sustaining excellence by prioritizing competitive compensation and strategic investments that support student success.

The adopted budget reflects the division’s ongoing efforts to navigate a challenging fiscal environment shaped in part by chronic state underfunding and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, the budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year. Read about the FY 2027 Budget.
