Food Share Program
Thank you for supporting the Franconia Elementary Food Share Program
Hello! Over the last several months, we have been able to create a food share program at Franconia Elementary that services twelve families suffering from food insecurity. We are refining our process for solicitation of donations so that we can provide more balanced meals for these families in hopes of increasing their enjoyment of the meals we help to provide for them.
Food bags are sent home on Friday afternoon, so donations for this sign up will need to be delivered by Thursday, 6/11/2026, by 4:30PM.

Come join us in our upcoming musical Lemonade to see how Mother Goose teaches our nursery rhyme characters how to make the best out of a challenging situation. “When life hands you lemons, you should make lemonade!”

PROMOTION CEREMONIES 2026
All ceremonies will take place in the gym - enter building through the back (door 6 off the blacktop)
We are looking forward to welcoming families to our year-end ceremonies.
Please note the following guidelines:
- Parking for all visitors will be in the parking lot at the back of the building off Kathmoor Dr.
- Visitors will enter and exit through the gym doors off the blacktop in the back of the school (through the gate and across the blacktop to door 6).
- Programs will last approximately 1 hour.
· Please do not bring balloons.
- If you wish to take your child home with you at the conclusion of the program, you must sign them out with your child's teacher.

To ensure our students have a strong start to their day, this is a friendly reminder that the first bell rings at 8:35 AM and students should report to class. Being on time is essential as the morning meeting is a special time for students to build community with their classmates and teachers. Thank you for your partnership.

Mrs. Wise’s 5th-grade class members are officially published authors! Our talented students stepped back in time to write historical narratives, stepping into the shoes of the very first immigrants to arrive at Ellis Island. They beautifully documented these emotional journeys through creative journal entries and hand-drawn illustrations. Want to read a signed copy? Head on over to the school library to check out their incredible work. (Bonus: Mr. Popi gives it a glowing 5-star review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

PTA CORNER
June PTA Meeting
Thursday, June 4th | 7:00pm - 8:00pm | Franconia Cafeteria
Join us for the final PTA meeting of the year. We will officially hold elections for next year’s PTA Board and discuss a larger donation item for the school.
In years past, these larger donations have included classroom rugs, water bottle filling stations, and other items that directly support students and staff. We have been brainstorming ideas over several meetings and have also gathered input from staff. Now it is time to review the options and vote.
We need a quorum in order to vote on both the Board slate and the donation expenditure, which means we need members to attend. We would love for you to be part of the conversation.

Back-to-School Supply Kits Available – Order Now
Avoid the crowded stores this fall and skip the trips to multiple stores to find everything on your list. Do your back-to-school shopping from the comfort of your own home instead.
Franconia is offering school supply kits for sale online through Sprout School Supplies for the 2026-27 school year. With a few easy clicks, your student(s) will be all set for back-to-school this fall. No need to lug those supplies to open house - all kits will be delivered straight to your child's classroom in the fall.

Picnic on the Playground
Monday, June 15th| 5:00pm - 7:00pm | Franconia Playground
We are excited to close out the year with an informal community gathering on the playground.
We’re kicking it old school with chalk, bubbles, face painting, field games, music, and time to hang out together before summer begins. Free pork-free hot dogs, watermelon, and cake provided by the school while supplies last.
Please bring a blanket to sit on, drinks, and any other food or snacks your family would like to enjoy and join your fellow Penguins in celebrating the end of the school year!
This is not a drop-off event. Students must be accompanied by an adult.

A federal food benefit program for eligible K-12 students that provides a one-time $120 benefit per eligible child to purchase groceries during summer break.
Who Needs to Apply?
You must apply if:
- Your household does not receive SNAP, TANF, or income-based Medicaid and
- Your child did not apply for free or reduced-price school meals with the National School Lunch Program.
You should also apply if your child attends a school that provides free meals to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision, unless your household already receives SNAP, TANF, or income-based Medicaid.
Who Does Not Qualify?
Your child may not qualify if they:
- Are homeschooled
- Attend a virtual school
- Attend a non-public school that does not take part in the National School Lunch Program
Exception: Children may still qualify if the household receives SNAP, TANF, or income-based Medicaid.
If you need to apply, you can complete a new online application or print and mail a paper application to the Virginia Department of Social Services. Alternatively, the Virginia SUN Bucks Call Center (866-513-1414) will accept applications June 15 through August 31 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

ELEMENTARY INSTITUTE
FOR THE ARTS
We are excited to share information about our Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA) — a dynamic summer enrichment program serving students currently in grades K–5. Students currently in grade 6 are eligible for our secondary program, Institute for the Arts (IFTA).
Our programs offer students daily experiences in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance in a fun, supportive environment designed to nurture creativity and confidence. To ensure access for all families, we provide:

New Cell Phone Policy
New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1
On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.
This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.
High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.
Student Bus Pass
Student Bus Passes Offer Free Transportation
All Fairfax County middle and high school students can get a Student Bus Pass SmarTrip card to ride the Fairfax Connector and Fairfax CUE buses for free! With the pass, fares are free from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, all year. Learn more about the Student Pass and access the application, which can be returned to the front office.
Additionally, our students can ride Metrobus for free. Visit the Fairfax County website for details and approved Metrobus routes and to access the application.
Children 12 and younger ride for free on the Fairfax Connector with a paying adult.
Bus Discount Program for Adults
Fairfax Connector’s Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP) provides 50% off fares for low-income residents ages 18-65. Learn more about the TRIP program and how to apply.
LGBTQIA+ Pride Month.
In the month of June, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. We stand with those facing an ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. This Pride Month, we reaffirm and uphold the dignity of LGBTQIA+ people. Caribbean American Heritage Month
FCPS celebrates the rich diversity and honors the many contributions of immigrants of Caribbean heritage to our nation during the month of June. Caribbean individuals are some of the most ethnically diverse in the world. There are more than 8.5 million individuals in the United States born in the Caribbean or of Caribbean ancestry. The last day of the school year is Wednesday, June 17, and students will be dismissed early. Check with your child's school for its individual dismissal time.
