From Your Family Liaison: Kathryn Dunbar
In addition to my Family Liaison responsibilities, I oversee the volunteer program for Haycock, including helping families register as volunteers. At the behest of the District, I compiled a report with Haycock's volunteer statistics for the school year. I was blown away by the number of hours our school families donated in support of our students! Haycock has 427 approved volunteers who this year provided 2,954 hours of volunteer service! Haycock is SO lucky to have such wonderful, supportive families! A heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you!

You may have heard that a librarian from the Tysons Pimmit Library recently visited Haycock to advertise Fairfax County Public Library's summer reading program. Reading during the summer is key to minimize summer learning loss. Also known as summer slide, this is when children forget learned reading skills because they aren't using them regularly and which can have detrimental, long-term effects when children return to school in the fall.
Fear not! Reading and participating in engaging reading activities (like the one offered by the Fairfax County Public Library) throughout summer are two effective ways to combat summer learning loss!
This year's Fairfax County Public Library's Summer Reading Adventure for youth AND adults will run June 17 - August 19. The theme is "Unearth a Story"... what's not to like? Reading, Prizes, Fun! Registration begins June 10!

Speaking of Summer Reading...

-
The Reward: Bring the completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between July 1 and August 31 to choose a free book from their designated list!

Media Balance and Well Being Toolkit
As the school year comes to a close, please keep in mind that digital wellbeing means maintaining a healthy and balanced relationship with technology. The media balance and well being toolkit includes practical guidance for using technology in a balanced and purposeful way.
Three key reminders for the final weeks of school are:
- Ensure student screen time is educational by considering the value of technology/media use in relation to other content.
- Balance online and offline learning experiences and materials.
- Prioritize active use of technology for creation, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Visit the toolkit today: Media Balance and Well Being Toolkit!
