The Cardinal Connection: CPES News Delivered to You
Student holding a dish of chicken and rice

Dear Cardinal Families,

Today, we want to shine a well-deserved spotlight on our incredible cafeteria manager, Ms. Stella Lee, and share a fantastic success story from our lunchroom.

As we all know, trying new foods can be a little intimidating for elementary students. To help our kids expand their palates, Ms. Lee recently launched a brilliant "Free Sample" initiative. Her first feature? A delicious, savory chicken and rice dish.

When samples first came out, the initial reaction was classic elementary skepticism. Most students were pretty hesitant to give it a shot. However, with a little gentle encouragement from Ms. Lee and our lunchtime staff, a few brave students took that first bite—and the reaction was instant joy!

Word spread quickly across the cafeteria tables. Before we knew it, students were lining up for a taste, loving it, and eagerly asking, "When is this going to be on the regular menu?!"

We are absolutely thrilled about this new sampling program. One of the biggest hurdles for kids trying new school lunches is the fear of the unknown. No student wants to commit their entire lunch tray to a brand-new dish, worry about not liking it, and then end up hungry for the rest of the day.

By offering these free, bite-sized tastes, Ms. Lee is giving our students a safe, zero-risk way to try new things. If they like it, great! If not, they still have their trusted favorite lunch ready to go.

We are so grateful to Ms. Lee for her creativity, warmth, and dedication to making our school cafeteria an exciting (and delicious) place to learn and grow.

Warmly,

Allison Hoak, Principal

Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

📆Calendar Reminders - No School

We look forward to seeing our Cardinal back in the nest on Thursday, May 28!

👕Weather & Dress Reminder

It’s hot outside but our air conditioning is chilly! Please send your child in layers (like a light sweatshirt). As a reminder, crop tops, strapless tops, short dresses, short skirts, and short shorts are not for the school day. Thank you for your support and attention to this reminder.

🍴Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance

It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.

If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.

💊End of Year Medication Pick-Up

If your student has any medications or belongings in the Health Room, please make plans to pick them up before the end of the school year.

The Health Room is open Monday through Friday, from 9am to 3pm, excluding holidays. Please call ahead at (703) 255 - 5610 to confirm availability.

If your student's medication is not picked up by a parent or guardian by the last day of school by the end of the school day, the student's medication will be discarded.

Medications cannot be sent home with your student.

Questions? Contact Vilma F. Bermudez, SHA at (703) 255-5610 or vfbermudez@fcps.edu or Michelle Bui, PHN at (571) 396 -2571 or mbui1@fcps.edu. Thank you!
