  Message from Principal Vereb
🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive
Good evening, Herndon ES Families,
This week was another busy and meaningful week at Herndon Elementary as we continued balancing strong instruction, SOL testing, staff collaboration, and opportunities to celebrate the incredible work happening across our school community.
Throughout the week, students across multiple grade levels participated in Math SOL testing. I continue to be incredibly proud of the focus, perseverance, and effort our students are demonstrating during this important season. Our staff also continues working diligently to provide targeted remediation, intervention, and support for students preparing for retake opportunities. This work reflects the collective commitment of our entire school community to ensuring every student feels supported and prepared.
In addition to SOL testing, I continued one-on-one meetings with staff members as we reflect on this school year and begin planning thoughtfully for next year. These conversations continue to provide valuable insight into the strengths, celebrations, and opportunities that will help guide our continued growth as a school community.
This week, we were also honored to welcome Superintendent Dr. Reid to Herndon Elementary. Dr. Reid visited several classrooms across the building and had the opportunity to see strong teaching and learning in action. During her visit, she observed kindergarten students learning about weather through music and engagement, first grade students practicing foundational literacy skills, and third grade students engaged in writing instruction and small group reading support.
Dr. Reid also toured our ongoing renovation and addition project alongside members of the Design and Construction team. Construction continues progressing steadily, and we remain excited about the future learning spaces that will support our students and staff for years to come. We are grateful for the continued investment in Herndon Elementary and proud of the work happening both inside and outside our classrooms.
On Wednesday, our Guiding Coalition met with teacher leaders from across the building. This meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on our collective work, celebrate the leadership of our teacher leaders, and continue strengthening systems and supports that positively impact students throughout our school.
We also celebrated our sixth-grade students this week with SOL celebrations recognizing their hard work, perseverance, and growth throughout the testing process. These moments of celebration remain important as we acknowledge the effort students are demonstrating during this busy season.
This week also included the final Fairfax Association of Elementary Principals (FAESP) meeting of the school year, where principals received important updates from Dr. Reid and reflected on the work accomplished across Fairfax County Public Schools this year while planning ahead for next school year.
On Thursday evening, our school hosted a heartwarming Mentors and Mentees Game Night. It was wonderful seeing students, mentors, and families engaged together in such a positive and joyful environment. Special thanks to our counseling team for coordinating this meaningful event and continuing to strengthen relationships and connections for students.
To close out the week, I joined the Title I Office alongside colleagues from across the division to engage in important conversations and updates as we prepare to finish this school year strong and begin planning thoughtfully for next year.
As we move through these final weeks of school, our focus remains steady: strong instruction, meaningful relationships, targeted support for students, and creating positive experiences that help every Bee continue growing and thriving. Thank you for your continued partnership, encouragement, and support throughout this important season of the school year.
With appreciation,
Dr. Monika Vereb
