🐝 WFES Happenings this Week...

Dear Families,

What an incredibly vibrant, busy, and successful week we’ve had! From show-stopping stage performances to focused hard work in the classrooms, our students have truly shone.

Here is a look back at what we accomplished together this week:

🎶 Music in the Air: Performance Highlights

Our hallways were filled with rhythm and melody this week thanks to some spectacular student performances! We're lucky to have such a talented music team leading our students.

  • Kindergarten & First Grade: Our youngest performers hosted a Musical Informance. It was wonderful to see them share their learning process, rhythmic skills, and joy of music with everyone.

  • Second Grade: The stage came alive with a absolutely show-stopping performance of Bugz! A huge congratulations to our second graders for their hard work, amazing costumes, and incredible energy.

📝 SOL Testing Updates

This week marked the completion of our first round of SOL testing. We are incredibly proud of the focus, stamina, and determination our students displayed during testing days.

  • What’s Next? As scores are processed, school staff will reach out directly to families of students who qualify for targeted remediation.

  • Retake Opportunities: Students who fell just short of a passing score will have the opportunity to receive extra support and retake the SOL. We are here to support every child's success!

🎨 PTA News: Big Visual Updates Coming!

Thank you to everyone who attended our recent PTA meeting. We have some exciting news to share from the session: the board officially voted to move forward with funding campus murals! We are thrilled to bring more color to our walls.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Warmly,

Sharyn Prindle

Green Team Officer Applications

GREEN TEAM Officer applications

Attention all current 4th and 5th grade students interested in being part of our environmental leadership team at WFES next year. We are looking for students who are passionate about the environment and eager to help educate other students. We will continue to focus on recycling, composting, and maintaining our new outdoor spaces.  Officers will be asked to attend one officer meeting and one school-wide meeting each month after school. In order to provide leadership opportunities for as many students as we can, if your child is a patrol officer they can’t apply to be a Green Team officer, but they are welcome to be part of the Green Team after school.  If you have any questions, please email me at mpmuratore@fcps.edu.

Applications can be found in Schoology under “all students” and are DUE TO MRS. MURATORE NO LATER THAN 4PM ON MAY 27TH.

Application information

    • 5/22 - application available on Schoology (parents need to approve)
    • 5/27 - deadline to submit application 4:00 pm
    • 5/29 - officers announced

Our last meeting/celebration is on Wednesday, June 3rd. Please mark your calendar to celebrate with us!!

Many thanks to the PTA for funding the new plants in the retaining walls by the parking lot.  Thanks to Amy Neiberline who volunteered to design, purchase and plant them. These native plants will add some joy to this area of the school.

Wheels Up, Heads Up: Staying Safe on Bikes, Scooters, and E-Bikes

With so many students riding bikes, scooters, and e-bikes to school, we need your help ensuring they get to and from campus safely. Whether they are pedaling a traditional two-wheeler or zipping around on an electric motor, please review these essential safety reminders with your kids:

1. Protect Their Brains

It’s a non-negotiable: every student needs to wear a helmet. A properly fitted helmet is their number one defense against serious injury.

2. Pedestrians Have the Right of Way

School zones are crowded. Remind your kids to slow down significantly around foot traffic, especially near school entrances. If they need to pass a pedestrian, they should give a polite warning ("On your left!") or ring a bell well in advance.

3. Manage E-Bike Speed

E-bikes and motorized scooters are heavy and fast.

The Golden Rule: Just because a ride can go 20 mph doesn't mean it should around a school.

Remind your riders to keep their speed in check, allow plenty of braking distance, and never carry passengers (one person per scooter!).

4. Ditch the Distractions

Texting or wearing noise-canceling headphones while riding is highly dangerous. Students need their eyes on the road and their ears open to hear approaching cars, sirens, or pedestrians.

We have also been receiving reports from the community about preteens and teens driving recklessly in the neighborhood on E-bikes and E-motorcycles. This is an article with a recent case of a parent being charged due to reckless behavior by her 14 year old while on an E-motorcycle.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our streets and sidewalks safe for all students!

6th Grade Yard Signs are Here!

Celebrate your child's upcoming 6th grade promotion! WFES "Congrats" yard signs can be picked up in the office at anytime. We cannot send them home with your student, so please arrange to come by the front office during our regular hours of 8:00am-4:00pm. They are FREE!

FCPS Receives Regional Gold Level Baldrige Award

FCPS has been named a recipient of the 2026 Gold Award for Achievement of Excellence by The Partnership for Excellence. This recognition marks the first time an education applicant has won the Gold Award the first time they applied.

The award, based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program, represents the region’s highest level of recognition that a U.S. organization can receive for demonstrating its performance excellence, resilience, and long-term success. Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance

It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.

If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year
