As part of our upcoming cafeteria renovation process, there will be a temporary change to our breakfast and lunch serving line beginning Thursday, May 28th, through the end of the school year.
Here is what you and your child can expect:
-
New Serving Line Location: Students will get their meals from a temporary serving line set up inside the cafeteria seating area. School staff will be on hand to help guide students through the new line and ensure lunch runs smoothly.
-
Menu Update: Friday, May 22nd, will be the final Pizza Day of the school year.
-
Rotating Schedule: After the serving line changes, the cafeteria will follow a one-week rotating menu schedule. Please see this link for breakfast and lunch menus, to help your child plan their meals.
Food Services is committed to making this transition as seamless as possible with zero disruptions to student meal times. Thank you for your flexibility and support as we work to improve our school facilities!
Dear Lees Corner Families,
As our school renovation continues, we want to provide you with an important update regarding the next phase of work. Our necessary roofing project on the current construction of the West Addition is tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 1st to Friday, June 5th.
We understand that roofing work, particularly the application of waterproofing materials like hot asphalt, can unfortunately generate noticeable odors. We want to assure you that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and our Design and Construction (D&C) team are implementing rigorous safety measures to protect all students, staff, and visitors:
Safety First: Roofing activities are never conducted directly over occupied areas. This specific work is occurring on the roof of the new additions, which are currently unoccupied by students and staff. As shared before, construction zones are clearly cordoned off with fencing and signage, and all community members must keep out of these areas.
Odor Mitigation: Mechanical systems adjacent to the work will be monitored and shut down as necessary to limit odors from entering the building. Furthermore, contractors will be using an odor suppressant (not just a scented masking agent) that acts at the molecular level to substantially reduce the release of specific compounds from the asphalt. For more information on the odor suppressant please see this PDF.
Onsite Supervision: An FCPS Design & Construction representative will be onsite whenever the contractor is working to ensure protocols are strictly followed, including keeping project materials away from air handling unit intakes. All materials used are required to be asbestos-free.
Understanding Roofing Odors
Per FCPS Design & Construction, roofing odors do not indicate a harmful exposure. Some compounds in the asphalt have very low odor thresholds—meaning you can smell them at concentrations far below the levels associated with adverse health effects.
While some individuals may experience temporary and unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, watering eyes, or nausea, these are short-term effects that can be relieved by seeking fresh air. FCPS D&C can confirm that long-term health consequences are not a result of the levels of exposure found inside the buildings during these projects.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the main office at 703-227-3500. As needed, we will continue to field your concerns promptly to the right contacts.Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we complete this essential phase of our renovation.
Sincerely,
VaRonica Sloan & Jennifer Hutchinson

For the past few years, we have opened our Library during the summer for students and their families to select books. School renovations will prevent this opportunity from being offered to students this summer. In addition, the “Free Libraries” around the building will not be accessible because of the renovations.
SO…We are excited to bring “Blizzard’s Book Jam” to LCES! This is a great opportunity for students to get some “new-to-you” summer reading and give away some books that they have finished reading to others!
Each student may bring a maximum of 3 BOOKS. It is our goal to provide ALL students with 1-2 “new to you” books. Therefore, students should not necessarily expect to come home with the same number of books they donate.
Books must be in good condition* (see note) and appropriate for students in grades K-6 (something you would find in our library 😊 or a book that you know a student has enjoyed in the past).
* PLEASE NOTE: The following will not be accepted for the swap:
- activity books
- pamphlet style books (like the ones from Chick-Fil-A)
- magazines
- religious books
- books that have been written in
- damaged books (missing or torn pages or cover)
Students will drop off books during their scheduled library time during the week of May 19th.
During the week of June 8th, students will come to the library to select their “new-to-you” books (either during their scheduled library time, or a time arranged with their classroom teacher.
Any extra books we have will be shared with other schools in need.
Thank you for participating in our “Blizzard’s Book Jam”!
Happy Reading!
We're incredibly grateful for all the time you volunteered this year! Whether you helped for a few minutes or a few hours, you truly made Lees Corner a better place. Your time and efforts genuinely matter, and we appreciate it so much.
Please stop by our reception so we can thank you in person on Thursday, May 28th at 4:15pm.
We have a limited number of homeroom class photos for sale for $10. Please send/bring iin either exact cash or check (payable to Lees Corner ES) to the front office and specify which homeroom teacher.
Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance
It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.
If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.
Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services
Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other services.
Contact CSB Entry and Referral to get started by calling 703-383-8500 or emailing csb@fairfaxcounty.gov.
Additional Mental Health Resources
FCPS has resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional support can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number.
Recent reports have shared an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts.
And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.
