Paw Prints: Updates from Dr. Grove

Dear Wolftrap Families,

As we approach the final stretch of the school year, our hallways are buzzing with the energy of completed projects and upcoming celebrations. While we look forward to the summer break, I have several vital logistical updates and safety reminders to ensure a smooth transition for everyone.

🚦 Another Note on Pedestrian Safety: I am going to again address a recurring safety concern on Talisman Road.  On two separate occasions recently, I have personally witnessed children crossing directly in front of active traffic. Please understand that rolling down your window to wave children across or exiting your vehicle to walk with them does not mitigate the danger. Additionally, if you park on the corner, you are BLOCKING the natural crossing point for students, who cannot see around your car. Crossing in non-designated areas puts you and your child at risk. I urge you to use the established crosswalks and follow the direction of our staff. Thank you, again.

🍎 Community Support & Future Upgrades: We are incredibly grateful to the Westwood Cares Foundation for their generous donation to the Madison HS pyramid. We are excited that we are using these funds to launch a school food pantry to support our families in need. Keeping our community fed and supported is a top priority, and we look forward to this program’s growth.

Summer Technology Access If your child or family requires a computer for use over the summer months, please reach out to the Wolftrap office directly during the week of June 15th so we can coordinate assistance.

Facility Enhancements Looking ahead, we are excited to share that a new secured vestibule is scheduled for construction in the summer of 2027. This is a key component of FCPS long-term safety plan to ensure our building remains a secure environment for learning. Stay tuned for details.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for keeping our school community safe and thriving.

Dr. Maggie Grove, Principal

Ms. Megan Tipton, Assistant Principal

🏥 Health Room Reminders: Medication Pickup

Our health room staff has been hard at work supporting our students all year. To stay in compliance with school policy, please note the following regarding student medications:

  • Deadline: All medications must be picked up no later than student dismissal on the last day of school.

  • Disposal: Any medication remaining in the health room after this time will be destroyed.

  • Policy: Medications cannot be sent home with students; they must be retrieved by a parent or guardian.

    • Exception: High school students may transport over-the-counter medications with explicit parent/guardian permission.

  • Summer Programs: If your child is attending an FCPS-sponsored summer program, your existing authorization forms remain valid. However, you must still pick up the medication on the last day of school and personally deliver it (along with copies of the forms) to the summer site on day one. Please contact the health room if you require copies of your current forms.

📝SOL Family Score Reports PDFs

We are supporting our students through this time of SOL testing. The week of June 8, SOL family score report PDFs will post to SIS ParentVUE Documents.

💰Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.  Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities.

📱New Cell Phone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

🚦Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-2027 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.
