Principal’s Message to Families
Dear Families,
It has been another vibrant week here at RES! As the weather warms up, it’s wonderful to see our building—and our courtyard—filled with so much energy and focus.
Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:
- Math SOLs: Our students worked incredibly hard on their Math SOLs this week. We are so proud of the persistence and "math muscles" they displayed during testing.
- Final Early Release: This past Wednesday marked our last early release day of the school year. We appreciate your flexibility with these schedules throughout the year as our staff utilized that time for final instructional planning.
- Academic Milestones: In Literacy, students wrapped up Unit 7 of Benchmark. It’s impressive to see how much their reading stamina and analytical skills have grown since fall.
- Courtyard Learning: We’ve been taking full advantage of the beautiful spring weather! Many classes moved their lessons outdoors, and "Lunch Bunches" in our courtyards have been a popular experience and social highlight this week.
It is hard to believe we only have about one month left of the school year! While summer is on the horizon, we are committed to finishing the year strong. We are focusing on three key pillars for these final weeks:
- Attendance: Every day counts for continued learning and growth both academically and socially.
- Assessments: Completing end-of-year growth checks with confidence.
- Celebration: Taking the time to honor our students' hard work, accomplishments, and the friendships they’ve built.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for making this school community so special. Let’s make these last few weeks the best ones yet!
Warmly,
Shannon Mueck
Principal, Ravensworth ES
May - Patrol of the Month
Congratulations to our May Patrol of the Month, 6th grader, Caroline Novak. Caroline has taken on extra responsibilities this year as a bus patrol and recently helped a student transition to a new bus and be his “buddy.” She has shown dedication as a leader and has been a true role model for safety. Awesome job, Caroline! |

SOL Support - Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Ravensworth Strings Registration 🎻 – 4th Grade
Rising 4th grade students have an exciting opportunity to join the Ravensworth Strings program next school year! Students will learn a string instrument, develop musical skills, and have fun performing throughout the year. You will get to choose from Violin, Viola, Cello, or the Bass.
No prior music or performance experience required! All we ask for is a willingness to learn and participate!
You will need to rent an instrument from a local music store when we return in August. If family finances are a concern, please speak with RES admin and Mr. Wentz about options next year. Please don't let money be the reason you think you cannot do Strings next year.
Please click or scan the QR code and complete the online form by May 29th, 2026, and please read everything carefully. In the past, we have done registration in the Fall, but we're getting a jump on next year already!
All students must complete the form, even if they do NOT plan to participate in
strings. This helps us plan appropriately for next year’s classes.
We look forward to making music together! 🎶
FCPS Caters to Food Allergies |
|
 |
May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.
To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.
Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students.
New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1
On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.
This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.
Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year
Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:
- Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including support for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
- Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
- Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.
Finish the School Year with Strong Attendance! |
|
 |
As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.
Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.
If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE. Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.
If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources.
