Hello Bull Run Families,
This week our students in grades 3-6 continued on with our state testing, having sat through their Reading and Math Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. I am proud of the effort and attention our students are putting into their work. I'm sure the results will reflect just that!
Earlier this week I sent a notice to the community reminding families about Kiss and Ride procedures. Please know, following these procedures will keep everything organized and all of our students safe. I am asking that all families pay attention to our protocols, as they will be enforced from day one next school year; so getting into good habits in the final month of school is good practice!
Tomorrow we will have a Community student parade followed by a night event where families will be hosting tables to celebrate their cultures with one another! Celebrating the diversity of cultures within our school not only fosters unity but also gives everyone a chance to learn from one another. We hope to see you tomorrow night at 5:00pm!
Reminders:
Tomorrow, Friday May 15, is our first attendance incentive spirit day-- Pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal day! Homerooms were notified at the end of the school day today if they reached the goal for the invitation to participate!
Have a wonderful weekend!
-Mr. Marotta

5th Grade Science
As we begin planning for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year, one important part of the process is creating balanced and supportive classroom communities where all students can thrive. While final placement decisions are made by our school team with thoughtful consideration, we value your insight and welcome any input you’d like to share regarding your child’s learning needs.
If you have specific information that you feel would help us in making the most appropriate class placement for your child — such as learning style, social-emotional needs, or past experiences — please submit that feedback using the form linked below by May 22nd. The form will be closed after that date.

Finish the School Year #ChargerSTRONG!
We are heading into the Final 4 (there are four full weeks of school, with a smaller week in between) — and we want every student to count! To celebrate Bull Run Elementary and keep our attendance soaring, we’re launching a special spirit challenge.
The Weekly Challenge:
If your student's class reaches at least 95% attendance for the week, they get to participate in a fun Spirit Day at the end of each week!
Mark your calendars for these themes:
-
May 15: Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day!
-
May 22: Crazy Hair or Hat Day!
-
June 5: Mismatch / Backwards Clothing Day!
-
June 11: Sunglasses at School Day!
The Grand Prize:
We’ve saved the best for last. If the entire school maintains a 95% attendance rate throughout these four weeks, we get to tape Mr. Marotta to the wall! Let’s show up, have some fun, and see if we can get the Principal stuck!

BENCHMARK UPDATE
Finishing Up Our Uncovering of History in Language Arts
Benchmark Unit 7 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about history and culture.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What’s the most interesting thing you learned during this unit? Why is it so interesting?
- Activity: Design a family crest or symbol. Work together to draw and decorate a family coat of arms that represents your history, values, traditions, or favorite activities.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update
On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.
Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities.
SOLace uses past test questions from officially released SOLs and contains intuitive explanations for each question, helping students learn and grow through their practice. Its user-friendly design and advanced accessibility features make it suitable for all students. Visit learnsolace.org today to see how SOLace turns practice into progress.

Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Learn more about online tutoring with Varsity Tutors.
Tutoring Resources for Families
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.
