News & Notes

SOL Testing Continues This Week

If you have a child in grades 3 through 6, please remember that required Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) testing is now under way. Here is the full schedule remaining, by grade level:

  • Wednesday, May 13 – 5th Grade Science
  • Monday, May 18 – 3rd & 6th Grade Math
  • Tuesday, May 19 – 4th & 5th Grade Math.

If your student is absent on the SOL test day, all efforts will be made to have them test on the day they return to school. If you know ahead of time that your child will be absent the day of the SOL test, please let your child’s teacher know as soon as possible.

You can help your children be physically prepared for testing by ensuring that they have a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a healthy breakfast in the morning, and come to school with a positive attitude. Be sure to remind them about the restrictions on using devices connected to the internet (such as smart watches) during testing.

Questions about SOL testing? Reach out to Lane’s Testing Coordinator and Math Resource Teacher, Kristie Cohen at kmcohen@fcps.edu.

Family Input for Class Placement Next Year

A regular end-of-the-year task that staff work on is student groupings for class placements next year. All staff have input on groupings that can best support students within the school day. We also appreciate your input for staff to consider on how your child works and learns best. Below is our family input form.

Please do not request a teacher by name or gender. Additionally, please do NOT include negative information about past teachers, as the teachers read these forms when assisting with class assignments. If you do, please know it will be deleted.

Because of enrollment changes over the summer, class assignments will not be finalized until the middle of August 2026. Families will be contacted by the assigned teacher before the start of Open House in August.

If you are interested in sharing information, please complete the form below by Sunday, May 31.

You may also reach out via email to our family liaison Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu.

Join Us for Our Spring Cultural Awareness & Recognition Event (CARE) Night Next Thursday, May 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Our final cultural celebration event of this school year—Spring Cultural Awareness & Recognition Event (CARE) Night—has been scheduled for Thursday, May 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

We’ll have displays and activities for you to learn more about these recognitions and holidays that occur during the spring season:

  • Autism Acceptance Month
  • Arab American Heritage Month
  • Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month
  • Caribbean Heritage Month
  • Jewish American Heritage Month & Passover
  • Easter
  • Eid al-Adha.

There will be music and snacks as well. Check Wednesday Folders this week for the flyer.

Field Day Is Coming Friday, June 5, Volunteers Needed!

Field Day 2026 will be Friday, June 5, for all grade levels. This schoolwide event allows the students to participate in a variety of games and activities as a class. They will rotate through stations that provide different challenges.

  • Third through 5th grade students will participate in Field Day from 9:20 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
  • Kindergarten through 2nd grade students will participate from 12:50 to 3:35 p.m.

Sixth graders will be running stations this year, but adult volunteers are also needed to support them. Volunteers will help the students have a memorable day by coordinating station activities. All volunteers will receive instructions on how the station should run. There will be some water stations this year, so we need some volunteers who are willing to get wet.

All volunteers will need to sign up with the new FCPS volunteer system, if they haven’t already completed the approval process. Our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, will be monitoring our Sign-Up Genius electronic sign-up and will contact those volunteers who still need to register in that system.

Here is the link to sign up to help: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44ACAE2BA6FA7-63530838-field.

We are also seeking donations of specific items for certain stations. Please review the materials needed and help us out if you’re able. Our biggest need is 10-pack Capri Sun lemonade pouches.

Thank you in advance for supporting this special activity and our P. E. team!

Dear Lane Readers,

Starting in mid-May, notices regarding ALL library items that are checked out will be sent home weekly. All library books are due on Wednesday, June 3.

Please do your best to look for and return all books in good condition! It is also possible that books have been sent to school but have not yet made it to the library. If this is the case, apologies in advance for the crossed communication.

As a reminder, there are no fines for overdue books, however families are expected to pay the replacement cost for lost or damaged books.

Contact Sue Chozick, Librarian at schozick@fcps.edu with any questions.

May Heritage Celebrations: Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month

May is the nationally recognized heritage month for two groups—Jewish Americans and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Jewish American Heritage Month

Jewish American Heritage Month celebrates the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have also been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions.

We will have displays for both of these cultural groups and more at our Spring Cultural Awareness & Recognition Event (CARE) Night on Thursday, May 21. All families are invited!

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap); Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY); and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    • As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

All students entering 12th grade are to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents/guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student.

Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

VIP Camp (Values in Prevention) logo

Registration Still Open for VIP (Values in Prevention) Summer Camp for Rising 7th Graders

Values in Prevention (VIP) summer camp brings together multiple middle school communities in a coordinated effort to offer recreation, leisure, wellness, and prevention programming specifically focused on tweens. Held in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS), the camp is not curriculum-focused but instead focuses on building positive relationships with peers and caring adults while introducing students to new hobbies and activities in a safe and supervised environment.

The VIP camp for this part of the county will be held at Whitman Middle School in Alexandria from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the month of July, except on July 3 (Independence Day holiday) and July 31. Transportation to and from VIP camp is available, with most bus stops at feeder elementary schools. Breakfast, lunch, and snack are provided to all students at no cost, but students are welcome to bring their own lunches.

The fee for this camp is $100 per student for the entire month. Students who receive Free and Reduced Fee lunches can have that fee reduced to half. Additional financial assistance is also available on a case-by-case basis. Financial burden will not be a barrier for students to attend. The camp schedule includes at least four field trips, most of which are intentionally planned to promote socialization and offer worthwhile recreational experiences. There are additional fees for these field trips.

VIP Camp staff consists of After-School Program Specialists at area middle schools, teachers/instructional assistants who normally work in the After-School Program, School Resource Officers from the Fairfax County Police Department, and staff from NCS’ community and teen centers. All individuals have background checks and are badged.

Registration for VIP Camp is now open! Space is limited, so apply today if you are interested!

Find more information about the VIP camp on the FCPS website.
