Happy Friday, Panther Families!

Yesterday marked the completion of our final SOL assessment of the school year! We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, perseverance, and determination throughout testing season. Only make-up assessments and retakes remain, and if your child qualifies for a retake, it means they are extremely close to passing. Please continue encouraging them to stay focused and finish strong. Thank you for your unwavering partnership and support every step of the way!

Tonight at 5:30 p.m., the excitement begins as our BOYS’ and GIRLS’ Basketball Teams take on Carson Middle School in the Basketball Showdown right here in our school gym! Our Panthers need your energy, spirit, and loudest cheers as we come together for an unforgettable evening celebrating school pride and community.  And don’t forget — it’s a BLACKOUT! Wear BLACK and help us pack the stands with Panther Pride!  Come out, cheer loud, represent Langston Hughes, and help us make this an electric night for our students and school community!

Also, please join us on Wednesday, May 20th, at 5 p.m., for the National Junior Honor Society Induction (NJHS) Ceremony, as we celebrate the outstanding achievements and leadership of our students.

Then, on Thursday, May 21st, at 7 p.m., our Drama Department will present its Theater Showcase — and trust us, you are in for an incredible performance!

Stay connected! Please review the remaining school events and activities listed below.  The end is near!  😊  Take good care!

STUDENT SERVICES

SOL Score Reporting

Preliminary SOL scores are posted to ParentVUE and StudentVUE, in the ‘Test History’ tab, twice a week. SOL family score report PDFs will be posted in ParentVUE under the ‘Documents’ the week of June 8.

Social Emotional Learning with Second Step

In this week’s lesson, students learned about agency—the power to make and act on their own decisions. They identified some areas in their lives in which they have agency and learned that focusing on those areas can help them feel empowered. Family conversation starter: Tell your student about an area in your life in which you have agency. Ask them to describe where they have agency in life.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

May’s Mental Health Awareness Month is a great reminder to help your child build habits that support their well‑being into the summer. Encouraging routines like regular sleep, outdoor time, and unplugged breaks can set them up for a calmer, more confident transition into the months ahead. Talking openly about emotions and checking in with your child helps normalize mental health as something we care for just like physical health. Students are invited to show support by wearing green on Mondays in May, a symbol of hope and growth.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

End of After-School Program for the 2025–2026 School Year

As the school year comes to a close, please note that our after-school program will end on Friday, May 22nd. It has been a fantastic year, and we are so thankful for the support of our families and staff who helped make these opportunities possible for our students.

After May 22nd, there will be no late buses or after-school supervision. If a teacher chooses to keep a student after school for extra help or activities, families will need to make arrangements for transportation home.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support throughout the year. Together, we’ve made this a successful and rewarding experience for our students.

SoCo Summer Strings

Exciting news! SoCo Summer Strings is returning this summer! The camp will be hosted at South County Middle School from July 6-17, 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM (weekdays only). Camp is open to all rising 5th-9th grade students with at least one year of experience on the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will participate in two large ensemble rehearsals, an instrument-specific technique class, and a sectional each day.

You can find more information and register for camp at www.schsorchestra.org/soco-summer-strings. Register early to save money and reserve your student’s spot!
