For the past few years, we have opened our Library during the summer for students and their families to select books. School renovations will prevent this opportunity from being offered to students this summer. In addition, the âFree Librariesâ around the building will not be accessible because of the renovations.Â
SOâŚWe are excited to bring âBlizzardâs Book Jamâ to LCES! This is a great opportunity for students to get some ânew-to-youâ summer reading and give away some books that they have finished reading to others!Â
Each student may bring a maximum of 3 BOOKS. It is our goal to provide ALL students with 1-2 ânew to youâ books. Therefore, students should not necessarily expect to come home with the same number of books they donate.Â
Books must be in good condition* (see note) and appropriate for students in grades K-6 (something you would find in our library đ or a book that you know a student has enjoyed in the past). Â
* PLEASE NOTE: The following will not be accepted for the swap:Â Â
- activity books
- pamphlet style books (like the ones from Chick-Fil-A)Â
- magazines
- religious books
- books that have been written in
- damaged books (missing or torn pages or cover)
Students will drop off books during their scheduled library time during the week of May 19th. Â
During the week of June 8th, students will come to the library to select their ânew-to-youâ books (either during their scheduled library time, or a time arranged with their classroom teacher.
Any extra books we have will be shared with other schools in need.
Thank you for participating in our âBlizzardâs Book Jamâ!
Happy Reading!

Benchmark Unit 7 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about history and culture.Â
Â
Connect with your childâs learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Whatâs the most interesting thing you learned during this unit? Why is it so interesting?
- Activity: Design a family crest or symbol. Work together to draw and decorate a family coat of arms that represents your history, values, traditions, or favorite activities.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what theyâre learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your childâs reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Â
đ Exploring the Earth in Language Arts đ
Â
Benchmark Unit 8 in Language Arts is about earth science. Students in K-5 will be learning about the world around them, different natural processes, and the solar system. Grade six students will be exploring the earthâs structures and how they inspire our endeavors.Â
Â
Connect with your childâs learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Whatâs your favorite thing about our earth?
- Activity: Fill a ziplock bag with water, tape it to a sunny window, and watch condensation and evaporation in action by seeing how the water level changes over time.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what theyâre learning at each grade level. On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.Â
The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.Â
Read Dr. Reidâs message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities.
On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a âbell-to-bellâ phone-free policy.
This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day â thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.Â
High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.Â
Â
Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year
Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:
- Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.Â
- Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (âUniversal Grade Matricesâ) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
- Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.
As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your childâs success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.Â
Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.
If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE. Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.
If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your childâs school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources.
