Dear Churchill Road families,

We are excited to welcome May and all it will bring!

While the anticipation of summer break is building, we still have a significant amount of learning to accomplish. We are working as a staff to ensure students are engaged and ready to learn each and every day.  We would appreciate it if you would partner with us as well at home to encourage students of the importance of being ready to learn each day. Reminding them to stay on track and attentive will ensure these final months of school are productive and enjoyable for everyone.  Thank you!

This past week was a busy one:

  • Our fabulous PTA treated our staff to a  week of world travel celebrating the foods of England, Mexico, Japan and Italy - capping off with gift cards. Thank you to all the Churchill Road families who made this such a special week for our staff. A very special thank you to Vicki Yu and Petra Goetz for their creativity and hard work in organizing this spectacular week.
  • First graders put on a spectacular performance of their musical, “How Does Your Garden Grow?”
  • Kindergarteners learned about animals and their habitats during a field trip to Zoo Wild in Reston.
  • Our 3rd through 6th graders took their Reading SOL. We are so proud of our staff and students’ hard work to get to this point. Scores are starting to come in and are being posted to your ParentVUE accounts weekly on Wednesday’s and Friday’s.

Looking ahead:

  • The Mathematics SOL for Grades 3-6 was today, Tuesday, May 12.  The fifth grade Science SOL is next Thursday, May 21.  A good night’s rest and breakfast are great ways parents can support students from home.
  • Our final early release is tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13.  Students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m.
  • Our spring strings concerts are this Thursday, May 14.  The fourth grade strings group will be performing at 5 p.m. and our fifth and sixth grade orchestra will be performing at 6 p.m.
  • The PTA Backyard BBQ is this Friday, May 15. The weather is looking beautiful, and we hope to see many of you there.
  • Next week, our fifth graders will be traveling to the Children’s Science Center in Richmond, our sixth graders will be visiting Gettysburg, and our band students will be performing in their spring concert Thursday, May 21 at 6 p.m.

We look forward to finishing the year strong and making this May memorable!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pierson-Barr and Mr. Kilpatrick

Battle of the Books - Repeat Champions!

battle of the books

Churchill continues their winning streak in Battle of the Books. Students competed against Wolftrap ES after a yearlong club reading 10 books and answering related questions. Our team showed amazing teamwork and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Aliza A., Vera E., Aidan E., Terrence D., Kennedy H., Ellie J., Evelyn L., Josh L., Annika M., Anya M., Anna R., Grace S., Cecily W., and Masha Y. on a job well done!

Thank you to team coaches Ms. Scott, Ms. Hight and Ms. Overend for sponsoring the team this school year.

benchmark

📚 Exploring the Earth in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 8 in Language Arts is about earth science. Students in K-5 will be learning about the world around them, different natural processes, and the solar system. Grade six students will be exploring the earth’s structures and how they inspire our endeavors.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What’s your favorite thing about our earth?
  • Activity: Fill a ziplock bag with water, tape it to a sunny window, and watch condensation and evaporation in action by seeing how the water level changes over time.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
