A Message from Dr. Rolon

Dear Justice Community,

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and it was such a joy to celebrate the incredible staff members who make Justice such a special place each and every day. Our teachers, counselors, instructional assistants, office staff, custodians, cafeteria workers, and support staff give so much of themselves to our students and community, and we are deeply grateful for all they do.

A huge shout out to our PTSA for hosting a wonderful luncheon on Wednesday, as well as to everyone who helped support and contribute to the event. Your generosity and partnership mean so much to our staff and school community.

To end the week, we came together to celebrate our connectedness and all that makes Justice so special. It was a meaningful opportunity to recognize and celebrate our amazing school, staff, students, and community.

We also completed another important week of IB testing. Almost all of our seniors took the IB Language and Literature exams on Thursday and Friday, and we had over 99% attendance across both days. We are incredibly proud of our students for showing up prepared and focused, and we appreciate all of the hard work and support from our teachers, staff, and families that helped make this success possible.

This week, we begin SOL testing by period starting on Tuesday. Attendance is critical for the remainder of the school year, and we appreciate your partnership in ensuring students are present, on time, and ready to learn each day.

As a reminder, late bus opportunities are available Monday through Thursday now through June 4, with the exception of Memorial Day week. Saturday School will also continue every Saturday through May 30.

Thank you for your continued support of Justice High School. Have a great week!

Regards,

Sean Rolon, Ed.D.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving - Q4 Presentation Wednesday, May 13

This is our last PSTD presentation of the year.

The state of Virginia requires students and their parents or legal guardians to attend ONE session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). The 90 minute session requires participants to be actively involved during the presentation. This is offered in conjunction with our 10th grade driver education curriculum and is a requirement. All sessions are in person for the 2025-2026 school year at Justice HS in the Auditorium. Registration link, and schedule is below. It is also posted on your 1oth grade teacher’s SCHOOLOGY PAGE.

UPCOMING PSTD DATES

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 and 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    • Parents/guardians may decide that their child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

All students entering 12th grade are to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents/guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

Electric Vehicle DC Grand Prix!

lab on wheels

On Saturday, May 2nd, students, under the guidance of Mr. Gaydon, proudly competed in the Electric Vehicle DC Grand Prix with their student-built electric car, the VoltWolf. This year-long project challenges the team to design, build, and refine every component of the vehicle while adhering to strict technical and safety regulations—making it a true “lab on wheels.”

Pilots Josue Saravia and Jose Flores demonstrated endurance, strategy, and skill, racing for over an hour and completing 18 laps. The team’s success was supported by Jack Young, who documented the event as the media lead, and Anthony Ceto-Terraza, who ensured all safety protocols were followed as safety manager.

A special highlight was the car’s striking design. Josue Saravia did an outstanding job leading the auto body paint and design, in collaboration with the Edison Auto Collision Academy.

Justice Educator Making a Difference in Senegal

senegal

During her recent visit in Senegal, Ms. Kirsten Salonga was able to observe and teach classes at various schools, sharing her passion for combining language development with classroom content while also describing the school culture back home. Justice High School’s diverse community and rich representation of the United States were especially meaningful to the students, teachers, and administrators she met, who greatly enjoyed learning about the school. Ms. Salonga was incredibly proud to present Justice High School shirts as a symbol of the connection between the two schools and countries.

Special thanks Mr. Garvey and our Activities Office for providing the shirts!

From FCPS

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students

Keeping Children Safe Online

The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost

Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes; on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring; essay editing; and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Learn more about online tutoring with Varsity Tutors.

No-Cost Mental Online Therapy for All High School Students

Is your student experiencing anxiety, behavior changes, or challenges with peer and family relationships? Do they seem withdrawn or uninterested in their usual hobbies?

Parents/caregivers can refer their children for free weekly therapy with a licensed therapist through Hazel Health. Visit the FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for information about this service.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
