Message from Mr. Greata

Can you believe there are only 23 days until graduation? As our seniors wrap up their AP exams this week, they will begin final exams for their courses next Wednesday. From there, it will be a "mad dash" to the end of the school year! Last Friday, a letter was sent to all senior families containing a list of upcoming events and important dates. We also included a summary PDF that can be printed and displayed to help your family keep track of it all. Please check your email for that information or visit the Senior Page on our website for updated details on graduation, Grad Walks, and the All-Night Grad Party—which will be an absolute blast!

Last week, we held our final athletic Senior Nights for Girls Lacrosse, Softball and Boys Soccer. As always, these evenings were incredibly touching and inspiring. It is bittersweet to bid farewell to such a wonderful group of seniors, and we wish them the very best in their next chapters. I would specifically like to highlight one of our seniors on the softball team, Maia Kim, and her collaborative work with our orchestra teacher, Devyn Wilcox. After listening to her peers and seeking to understand their experiences, Maia reached out to Ms. Wilcox to find ways to make our musical concerts more inclusive, specifically for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. This multi-year initiative culminated in a recent partnership with Canterbury Woods that was featured in FCPS News. We encourage you to check out the article to learn more about this amazing project.

We also want to take a moment to look back at Staff Appreciation Week. We are so fortunate to have a school with an amazingly talented group of staff members who are dedicated to the education and well-being of our students. A huge thank you to everyone who helped coordinate those efforts, and especially our PTSO, who brought in the snack wagon last week. Thank you all so much for your dedication to our wonderful staff!

In student achievement news, two Woodson students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the DECA International Career Development Conference at the end of April to compete against the top students in the world. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication put in by Leyla Budak (11th grade), who placed as a Top 10 finalist in Personal Financial Literacy, and Sung Joo Kim (11th grade), who placed as a Top 20 finalist in Business Services Marketing. DECA allows students to simulate real-world situations in business, marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship, and these are incredible achievements.

Looking ahead to this week, please join us for our student talent show, CAVCHELLA, on Thursday, May 14th at 7:00 PM! Come out and support your fellow Cavs as they showcase their amazing talents. You can buy tickets online beforehand or at the door.

Finally, District competition is in full swing. We hope to see you at the talent show or at one of our athletic competitions cheering on our teams. Check out woodsonsports.com for all the details.

Have a great week, Cavs!

______________________________________________________________

Across Virginia this spring, high school students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) tests.  An FCPS Frequently Asked Questions webpage (SOL High School Assessment Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)) provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Students may be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 20 and May 20. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify Woodson’s Assessment Coach, Kathleen Crosson, as soon as possible.

SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

Parent FAQs: SOL Testing

Q: What should my child bring to school specifically for testing?

A: Students should bring two pencils, their FCPS-issued Chromebook and charger to the test. Students may not bring personal computers - they cannot be used for SOL testing.

Q: Are students allowed to use calculators on the SOL test?

A: No, all students use the online version of the DESMOS calculator for the math and science SOLs.

Q: When will my student get an SOL schedule?

A: Teachers of students in SOL classes will inform students of testing dates and locations.

Q: How long are the SOLs?

A: SOL tests are untimed. In general, the SOL tests take approximately 90 minutes to complete.
