Roadrunner Rundown

May 4, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are very proud of our 5th and 6th grade students who put on a wonderful performance of Alice and Wonderland last week! The PTA Family Picnic is Friday, May 15, 5:30-8:30 pm; a fun evening for all - see you there.

Today’s start of Staff Appreciation Week began with a wonderful light breakfast and coffee/ tea bar! Thanks to our parents and PTA for making this “World Cup Week” of festivities start so sweet. Honestly, the gift of gratitude to your child’s teachers this week or beyond, costs a few minutes of time and means millions. Share a kind thought or two when you can.

This is our third and final call for optional input for the Class Placement Form. If you have information to share about your child to assist us, please do so by Friday, May 8.This is a hard timeline; requests received after this date will not be considered.

Our final 3 hour early release for the school year will be on Wednesday, May 13th. Families should follow the same dismissal plan they chose previously. We will not accommodate changes on the 13th, except for emergencies.

Have a great week!

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

Make May Count

May is the last full month of the 2025-2026 school year. Strive to come to school every day, and be on time, as you look forward to the summer break.

Standards of Learning (SOLs) Start this Week

Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. State assessments measure how students are learning grade level standards. Format and timing of state assessments vary by subject and grade level. See the table below. Test formats include:

  • Standards of Learning (SOL) mathematics, science, and reading standardized tests.
  • Growth assessments completed as part of classroom instruction using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for mathematics and iReady for reading.

More information about these assessments can be found on the webpage: SOL Tests in Elementary and Middle Schools (https://www.fcps.edu/node/42716). The Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/50045) outlines the division testing schedule for required assessments at each grade. If you have questions about state assessments or about SOL retesting, contact your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator, Kelly Willis at kawillis@fcps.edu.

PTA Update

Empty the Bus & Kiss+Ride Line!

We can do this! Just for one day, let’s empty the Kiss & Ride line and give our buses a break. And here’s the fun part: if a bus gets emptied, Roadie and Mr. Chapman will ride that bus back to school with students! Jump onto the bike train, walking bus, or run at any point along the way—everyone counts! The class with the most participants will win the Roadrunner Golden Shoe! Breakfast will be waiting for you on the blacktop at 8:30 am. Let’s come together, make a plan, and show what our Roadrunner community can do!

Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week = Marshall Road World Cup!

World Cup

It’s Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week at Marshall Road, and this year we’re celebrating World Cup–style!

This year we are not requesting parent donations, instead families can join the fun by completing a Trading Card” for their teacher/staff and checking the student schedule for ways to participate throughout the week.

Here’s the schedule for our teachers and staff:

  • Monday: Fuel up with coffee, croissants, and a yogurt bar as the games kick off.
  • Tuesday: Bike, walk, or run to breakfast and help your team score!
  • Wednesday: Recharge with a relaxing ceramic painting session.
  • Thursday: Share some laughs and enjoy lunch from CAVA.
  • Friday: Celebrate with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and cheer as prizes are awarded to our all-star participants!

We would like to thank all the volunteers and local businesses who helped make this week possible. They generously donated their time and provided gifts that will be part of a raffle for all teachers and staff. A special thank you to All Fired Up DC for ceramics, as well as Caboose Commons, RTR Pilates Reformer, Round House Theatre, Clyde's Restaurants, and many more for their generous gift certificates and support. We are so grateful for the strong support from our community!

Get Involved at Marshall Road

As the school year comes to a close, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents and community members who volunteered their time and energy to support the many programs and activities at Marshall Road. Your involvement makes our school stronger!

Looking ahead, we invite you to be part of next year’s efforts—whether by helping with a small part of a program your family enjoyed or taking the lead on something you’re passionate about. Interested in getting involved? Reach out to Monica at president@marshallroadpta.org.

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight

Hooray for Ms. Rosales, one of our amazing Third Grade teachers, who snagged the PTA Priority Parking Spot this week!

Ms. Rosales has been teaching at Marshall Road for almost ten years! She started in second grade and now teaches third grade. When asked what she loves about Marshall Road, Ms. Rosales said “because the families and students are great! It also doesn't hurt to be so close to where I grew up. I went to Flint Hill Elementary and my mom still lives in the same house. I also love being close to my son (Oliver is 2) who attends daycare across the street.”

In her spare time, Ms. Rosales enjoys hiking, exercising, and spending time with family. She has 4 nephews and 5 nieces and most of her family lives in the area. Fun fact: Before having kids Ms. Rosales traveled a lot and has been to over 20 countries!
