A Note From Principal Seward

Carlos

Dear South Lakes Families and Seahawk Community,

As we enter the month of May, there is a palpable sense of momentum and purpose throughout our building. The final stretch of the school year is upon us, and while the finish line is in sight, these next few weeks are critically important for our students to demonstrate all that they have learned and accomplished.

Our students have officially begun their Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and International Baccalaureate  (IB) testing, and I have been incredibly impressed by the focus, preparation, and determination I have seen in classrooms and hallways alike. This is a moment for our students to “lock in”, to trust their preparation, remain engaged, and approach each day with intention. We encourage all students to prioritize rest, maintain healthy routines, and keep perspective as they navigate this busy season. Your best effort, coupled with a clear and focused mindset, will go a long way.

As a reminder, during all SOL testing sessions, electronic devices must be powered off and put away. Accessing any device during testing will result in a score of zero. This includes newer technologies such as smart glasses, which are not permitted if they have the ability to record, connect, or transmit information. We ask for your partnership in ensuring students come prepared with only the materials they need for success.

This week provides us with a special opportunity to pause and recognize the incredible educators who make South Lakes such a remarkable place, Teacher Appreciation Week! Every day, our teachers go above and beyond to build meaningful relationships, deliver high-quality instruction, and support the academic and personal growth of every student. I encourage our entire community to take a moment this week to express gratitude, whether through a kind note, an email, or a simple word of thanks. These gestures matter deeply, and they reflect the strength of our school community.

As always, I am grateful for the continued partnership between our families, staff, and students. Together, we will ensure that every Seahawk finishes the year strong, proud, and prepared for what lies ahead.

Let’s stay focused, stay connected, and strong!

With Gratitude,

Carlos Seward

SEAHAWK Spotlights

South Lakes DECA Students Shine on the International Stage at ICDC 2026

Deca1
Deca2

We are proud to share an outstanding accomplishment from our students who recently represented South Lakes High School on the global stage at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

From April 24–28, fifteen of our students competed alongside peers from all 50 states and several countries, showcasing their talents in business, marketing, finance, and hospitality. These students represented South Lakes with excellence, professionalism, and pride.

Please join us in celebrating the following students: Charlie Anderson, Morena Arriaga, Kelsey Birkland, Luke Bowen, Ahna Castelda, Sadie Gardner, Vikram Hoskote, Isabelle Jackson, Jacob Meade, Aryana Singh, Maisie Smith, Jacob Stein, Sebastian Valencia, Nandana Velayudhan, and Isabella Zermeno.

Through their participation, our students engaged in high-level competition, sharpened their strategic thinking, and built real-world skills in leadership, communication, and innovation. Opportunities like this are transformational!

A very special congratulations goes to Sadie Gardner and Isabella Zermeno, who earned finalist honors in the Travel & Tourism Team Decision Making event. This was a incredible achievement at the international level.

DECA is a great organization that allows students to step confidently into competitive spaces, to lead with purpose, and to represent our community with integrity and excellence.

We are incredibly proud of each of these students and grateful to our staff, including Ms. Jennifer Dixon, for their leadership and commitment to student success.

Celebrating Our Students at the Global Action Showcase

GlobalAction

Wednesday evening, April 29, South Lakes High School was proudly represented at the Global Action/Global Classroom Showcase held at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  The Global Classroom Project provides a showcase where instruction is designed to engage, empower, and challenge every learner. Through authentic collaboration with international peers, students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions outlined in the our FCPS Portrait of a Graduate and in our IB Learning Profiles.

At the heart of this celebration of global learning and student voice was the powerful work of our French program. In partnership with Collège Georges Texier in Saint-Jean-d’Angély, France, our students engaged in a meaningful, cross-cultural exploration centered on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—specifically SDG 13: Climate Action. They communicated in both French and English, exchanged letters and videos, and engaged in authentic dialogue about how climate change impacts communities across continents.

Seven of our French students served as “Junior Fellows” in the Global Leaders program, which is an incredible distinction that speaks to both their academic commitment and their leadership. Four of these students took the stage during the main presentation, representing South Lakes with great distinction. Their voices carried the message of global responsibility and intercultural understanding, and they did so with remarkable clarity and pride. Two additional French students joined to help present our Global Classroom Project, engaging community members in thoughtful conversations about their learning and their partnership with peers in France.

We are equally proud of the work led by our Career and Technical Education and Language & Cultural Studies students in partnership with Akademie Svetla in the Czech Republic, where students explored SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Their analysis of school-based consumption and development of Green Design solutions further highlights the innovative thinking taking place across our classrooms.

South Lakes was well represented and we want to take a moment to highlight our students and the faculty sponsors of this initiative particularly Laura Bachman, Jen Dixon, and Amol Patel.

Skyview HS Boundary Meetings - Your Voice Matters!

FCPS has begun the process of developing the boundary for our new high school, Skyview High School. The school is located in the western part of Fairfax County. Establishing a boundary for a new high school affects surrounding schools and pyramids. The following western pyramids are included in this process:

  • Centreville High School
  • Chantilly High School
  • Oakton High School
  • South Lakes High School
  • Westfield High School

As part of this process, FCPS is providing Community Engagement Opportunities for those communities affected by the change. The proposed scenarios are now available for your review on the Boundary Explorer tool.

Based on community input, scenarios will be revised and presented during a the next round of community meetings in May. If you plan to attend in person or virtually, please click one of the links to register.

The same information will be shared at both meetings.

This is our chance as a community to use our voice in support of the South Lakes High School community. We encourage your attendance at the meetings and to share your voice.

For more information on the process, visit Skyview HS Boundary Study

When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.

Healthy Habits to Reduce the Spread of Flu and Other Germs

Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.

Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs
