Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Community,

As we conclude another full and meaningful week at Herndon Elementary School, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our staff, students, families, PTA, and community partners for helping make Teacher Appreciation Week so special. Our construction-themed celebrations brought tremendous energy throughout the building, and the thoughtful support shown to our staff reflected the strength of our school community. From meals and treats to kind words and encouragement, our team truly felt appreciated and valued.

A special thank you goes to Jenny Kimsey (PTA), Laura Santini (Front Office Assistant), and Yovanka Perez (Front Office Assistant) for the tremendous amount of time, organization, and care they dedicated throughout the week. Additionally, the handwritten notes from Mayor Kevin LeBlanc were an especially thoughtful gesture that meant a great deal to many staff members.

This week, our attendance team continued closely monitoring chronic absenteeism data as we work to ensure every student is present, engaged, and supported. We are proud to currently be at 6.1%, with our lowest point this year reaching 5.8%. As we move through the final weeks of the school year, we remain focused on finishing strong and returning to the 5% range. Thank you to our families for continuing to partner with us in supporting strong student attendance. To help maximize instructional time and student participation, we will also conduct iPFIT Buy Back opportunities before school, during next week’s Early Release Wednesday, and on the upcoming Teacher Workday.

Our leadership team also participated in a Resource Inequity Review connected to our federal identification status. This process provided an opportunity to reflect on past practices, systems, and resource allocation decisions while identifying ways to continue strengthening support and access for all students. These conversations are an important part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, student success, and ensuring our decisions remain aligned to the needs of our school community.

Additional highlights from the week include:

• Meeting with our Lead Mentors to finalize planning for next year’s Mentor/Mentee Program under the leadership of Mrs. Gonzalez and Ms. Gebauer.
• Holding our Community Meeting with staff centered on MTSS implementation while enjoying breakfast from Omelette Guys.
• Collaborating with our AVID team to make decisions regarding next year’s AVID programming and student supports.
• Attending the FCPS GMU iLEAD evening event, where Mr. Jones joined other FCPS leaders in presenting on discipline disproportionality and equitable practices.
• Supporting our Grade 4 and Grade 5 students as they completed the Reading SOL assessment on Thursday.
• Interviewing strong candidates for our ELA Interventionist, Math Interventionist, and School Counselor positions as we prepare to continue the strong systems and student supports established by our beloved Ms. Bryant.

Thank you again for your continued partnership and support as we head into the final stretch of the school year. Together, we continue building a strong, supportive, and student-centered school community.

In Your Service,

Dr. Vereb Principal

The Herndon ES PTA is urgently looking for volunteers to step into board and event roles for next year so we can continue the programs and events our community loves.

Board positions opening include President, Treasurer, Secretary, and VP of Volunteers—with support and transition guidance already in place.

Not ready for a board role? We also need help leading events like Movie Night, BINGO, Skate Night, Book Fair, and more.
