Dear Families,
What a wonderful week it has been at Lake Anne! Thank you to our incredible South Lakes community for your generosity during last Friday’s Stuff the Bus event—together, we collected 2,860+ pounds of food to support the South Lakes Food Pantry. Your kindness truly makes a difference, and we are so grateful for the way our community shows up for one another.
We’re also excited to share that our chronic absenteeism rate is now 11.5%, and we are getting closer to our goal of being under 10%. Thank you for your continued partnership in making attendance a priority—every day at school counts, and it shows in our students’ growth and success.
This week, our students will begin SOL testing, starting with the Reading SOL on Wednesday, May 6 for grades 4–6. We know they are ready to shine! You can help set them up for success by ensuring a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and an on-time arrival, along with plenty of encouragement to boost their confidence.
We are also thrilled to celebrate Rainbow Teacher Appreciation Week! 🌈 We are truly over-the-rainbow grateful for our amazing Lake Anne staff—our teachers and staff brighten each day and truly color our world. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating them with kind notes, messages, or small gestures throughout the week.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership—we are so lucky to be part of such a caring and connected community.
Warmly,
Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal Mrs. Valencia Chenier, Assistant Principal Mrs. Leslie Grumbach, Assistant Principal

A big thank you to Beanstalk Vertical Farms for their generous donation of planting soil to support our edible garden! We are also grateful to the four volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to building our garden fence. Your hard work and generosity are helping our students learn and grow in a hands-on, meaningful way. We truly appreciate your support of our school community! |
- Upcoming SOL Dates:
- May 6 - Reading (Grades 4-6)
- May 14 - Math (Grades 3-6)
- May 19 - Science (Grade 5)
- May 20 - Reading (Grade 3)
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Bike & Roll to School Day!
Love riding your bike? Celebrate Bike & Roll to School Day and join students, families, and teachers across the country in biking to school together! This national event promotes healthy habits, encourages walking and biking, and helps reduce car traffic.
While it’s a one-day event, Bike to School Day inspires long-term change by showing communities the benefits of safer, active school commutes. Mark your calendars: May 6, 2026!
Registration is open at www.walkbiketoschool.org/registration/ , and the FCPS Safe Routes to School team offers incentives for participating schools. Ride together, make a difference, and show your community the power of active travel!

Mr. Johnson has beautifully hand-drawn the backdrops for our upcoming school musical, and now we need helping hands to bring them to life with paint!
If you have any availability during the school day, please consider stopping by his classroom to help out. No experience needed—just a willingness to pitch in.
Thank you, and please help spread the word to other Lake Anne families!

📚 Halfway Through Uncovering History in Language Arts 📚
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 7 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored why the past is important, how communities evolve, and ancient cultures.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What is one thing people in the past did differently from us? Would you want to live back then? Why or why not?
- Activity: Ask your child to pretend they’ve created a new world. What would they name it? Who would live there? What would it look like and how would it change over time? Have them draw a picture.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
