Principal’s Message to Families

Dear Ravensworth Families,

This last week of April our Ravens continued the development of the Portrait of a Graduate Skill of being ethical and global citizens.  Our students had the opportunity to learn about and see the enchanting Lion Dance performed by the Chua Martial Arts Program during our PTA sponsored assembly. Ms. Heiman led a heartfelt discussion with our 5th and 6th graders focusing on what it means to demonstrate and use language that is respectful and inclusive to all of our students and families.  Our 3rd and 4th graders did an outstanding job preparing and participating in their Reading SOLs with the entire school supporting their testing environment.

Upcoming this week, we have our Staff Appreciation Week sponsored by our incredible PTA and we have a PTA meeting on Wednesday, May 6th

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,

Shannon Mueck

Principal

Bike & Roll to School Day!

Love riding your bike? Celebrate Bike & Roll to School Day and join students, families, and teachers across the country in biking to school together! This national event promotes healthy habits, encourages walking and biking, and helps reduce car traffic.

While it’s a one-day event, Bike to School Day inspires long-term change by showing communities the benefits of safer, active school commutes. Mark your calendar: May 6, 2026! Registration is open at www.walkbiketoschool.org/registration/ , and the FCPS Safe Routes to School team offers incentives for participating schools. Ride together, make a difference, and show your community the power of active travel!

Ravensworth Strings Registration 🎻 – 4th Grade

Rising 4th grade students have an exciting opportunity to join the Ravensworth Strings program next school year! Students will learn a string instrument, develop musical skills, and have fun performing throughout the year. You will get to choose from Violin, Viola, Cello, or the Bass.

No prior music or performance experience required! All we ask for is a willingness to learn and participate!

You will need to rent an instrument from a local music store when we return in August. If family finances are a concern, please speak with RES admin and Mr. Wentz about options next year. Please don't let money be the reason you think you cannot do Strings next year.

Please click or scan the QR code and complete the online form by May 29th, 2026, and please read everything carefully. In the past, we have done registration in the Fall, but we're getting a jump on next year already!

All students must complete the form, even if they do NOT plan to participate in

strings. This helps us plan appropriately for next year’s classes.

We look forward to making music together! 🎶

SOL Support - Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Family Input for Class Placements 2026-2027

As we begin to plan for the 2026-2027 school year, we are inviting your input. Creating class assignments requires careful consideration and the involvement of many perspectives. We know a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. Should you have additional information about your specific child that school staff may not know, particularly regarding learning style and classroom environment, we ask that you please complete the  Class Placement Input Form

no later than May 9th, 2026. If you have more than one child attending RES, please complete one form per child.

We assure you that with or without a form, each child’s strengths and needs are considered. As in the past, families will receive class placement notification just prior to school starting.

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. This includes public budget hearings and an online survey.

📚 Finishing Up Journeys and Themes in Language Arts

Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the different lessons that stories across cultures can teach us.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: If you could go on an adventure like one of the characters you’ve read about in this unit, which one would it be and why?
  • Activity: Ask your child to imagine that they’re going on an adventure. Ask them to draw the items they’ll need to take with them. Would their supplies be different if the adventure was underwater or somewhere very cold?

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Family Spotlight Board

If your child has had a great personal/family moment lately, send Ms. Heiman (amheiman@fcps.edu) a photo and it will be displayed on the Family Spotlight bulletin board in the main hallway! Examples: family celebrated a holiday, cultural traditions, child rode their bike without training wheels, great soccer game, got a new pet, and more!
