 Dear Stone Families,
It was a busy and productive week at Stone Middle School. Students completed their Social Studies LAA projects and proudly displayed their work. We were honored to welcome Dr. Reid, who enjoyed seeing the creativity and effort our students put into their projects. We also dedicated time to increasing awareness around mental health, and some of our students participated in the county’s Feet Meet for students with disabilities. It was a week filled with both learning and fun.
As we move into the coming week, we are excited to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. This year, we are focusing on honoring the magic our teachers bring to the classroom each day. We encourage you to recognize our staff, whether through a donation or by submitting an FCPS CARES acknowledgment to highlight a teacher’s impact.
We will also begin our SOL testing season, starting with the Reading SOL on Monday. Please note that our schedule will be slightly adjusted to accommodate testing.
With only 31 days of school remaining, we ask that you encourage your student to attend each day on time, ready to learn, and prepared to SHOW OFF their knowledge.
Let’s have a great week, Panthers.

Helping Your Child Succeed During Spring Testing
As we head into the spring assessment season, students will participate in various SOL (Standards of Learning) tests based on their grade level and coursework.
Why Your Participation Matters
Fairfax County Public Schools encourages every family to take part in these assessments. Not only do these tests provide a clear picture of your child’s academic progress, but high participation is also vital for our community. Virginia requires a 95% participation rate to maintain a school’s accreditation and accountability ratings. When students opt out, it becomes much harder to accurately measure our school’s overall success.
Tips for Test Day Success
You can help your child feel confident and prepared by following a few simple steps:
-
Rest Up: Ensure they get a full night’s sleep before testing.
-
Fuel Up: Provide a healthy, balanced breakfast on the morning of the exam.
-
Stay Focused: Remind your student that the standard cell phone policy remains strictly enforced during testing sessions.
Attendance & Scheduling
Consistency is key! Please ensure your child attends school on their scheduled testing dates. If you know of an upcoming conflict that will cause your student to miss an exam, please contact the school office as soon as possible to make alternative arrangements.

SOL Test Dates
- May 4: Reading 7 and Reading 8
- May 7: Math 7, Algebra & Geometry
- May 12: Science 8 and Practice Science 7
Information About Retakes
Middle school students who do not pass a spring SOL test can try again before the school year ends. A parent or guardian must give permission for any student to take a retest. If you choose not to allow a retest, it will not hurt your student's grade or school record.
If you want your student to have a second chance to take the test, please sign up using the Parent Digital Consent website. You will use your SIS ParentVUE login for this.
Stone MS 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
Please join us for the 8th grade promotion ceremony at Westfield High School on Tuesday, June 2nd. Students should arrive by 5:30pm so that our program can begin on time at 6pm. Please have students dress as they would for a formal event. We were notified that there are some bleacher repairs at Westfield HS, so space may be limited for this event. If your family needs any special accommodations, please contact Ms. Tami Brumett at TLBrumett@fcps.edu

Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services
Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other services.

Additional Mental Health Resources
FCPS has resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional support can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number.
Recent reports have shared an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts.
And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.
