Dear Bucknell Families,
I cannot believe I am writing this, but Happy May 1st! It feels like we were just ringing in the New Year, and now we are officially entering our last full month of the school year. The energy in the building is high, and while we are racing toward the finish line, we have so much to celebrate and prepare for in the coming weeks.
A Night of Culture and Community
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Heritage Night. It was a beautiful evening filled with pride, learning, and connection. Celebrating our heritage isn't just about looking at the past; it’s about honoring the diverse stories that make our Bucknell community so vibrant today. When we share our traditions, languages, and histories, we build a bridge of empathy and understanding that makes our school a stronger, more inclusive place for every student.
A special shout-out to Ms. Neika Smith, our 5th-grade teacher and Equity Lead, who worked tirelessly to coordinate this event. Thank you, Ms. Smith, for your leadership and vision!

SOL Testing Begins Next Week

Building words, one sound at a time! 🔤✨
¡Formando palabras, un sonido a la vez! 🔤✨
The Montessori Moveable Alphabet is used by children to build words and express thoughts. The material consists of a wooden box that houses multiple sets of lowercase wooden letters in alphabetical order. Vowels are blue, and consonants are red to help students differentiate between the two. In the sequence of materials, the Moveable Alphabet comes after the child learns their letter sounds using materials that are more concrete, such as matching
objects to the letter sounds.
During a lesson, the teacher guides the child by telling the child a word and asking them to spell it using the sounds. For instance, the teacher may say “Spell cat…C…A…T…”(the teacher says the letter sounds, not the letter name). “What letter makes the ‘c’ sound?” The
child will scan the Moveable Alphabet box to look for the letter that makes that corresponding sound. When the child finds it successfully, the child will then place it on the work rug. The child and adult continue with this lesson until multiple consonant-vowel-consonant words are spelled.
Not only does this material help children build words, but it develops a keen awareness of beginning and ending sounds, blends, discrimination of sounds and symbols, and more. Once the child uses the Moveable Alphabet to spell words, they can continue and build sentences, then move onto writing the sentences and words.

Throughout the week, students can write thank-you notes, bring a small treat or handmade coupon, wear their teacher’s favorite color, lend a helping hand, and show their Bucknell spirit! Every small gesture makes a big difference and helps our staff feel valued and appreciated.
To help make celebrating even easier, we will be sharing a “Favorite Things” packet with information about staff members’ favorite snacks, colors, flowers, and more!

Yearbooks are on sale starting May 1 for $15 (limited quantity)! Prices will increase to $20 beginning June 1, so be sure to order early. Families can purchase a yearbook through MySchoolBucks or by sending cash/check to the school.

People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions. Let’s remember the difference between “Memorial Day” and “Veterans Day”: These two observances are often confused and can be easily misunderstood. Both are patriotic dates that honor the military community; however, these two federal observances could not be more different. Take a moment to understand the differences and why we observe “Memorial Day”:
“Memorial Day,” which is celebrated on the last Monday of May, honors military members who have died while serving the nation. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” when citizens were invited to decorate the graves of the fallen with flags and flowers, Congress later passed the “Uniform Monday Holiday Act” in 1968, establishing “Memorial Day” on the last Monday of May.
“Veterans Day,” which is celebrated on November 11, was established to honor those who have served in the nation’s Armed Forces.
As we observe “Memorial Day,” let us honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Eid Mubarak to all who observe! Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is the second of two main holidays celebrated in Islam. Muslims believe that Eid al-Adha signifies the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim, known as Abraham in Christianity and Judaism, to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as ordered by Allah. It focuses on sacrifice, the pilgrimage to Mecca and giving to those less fortunate. #OurFCPS
