Happy Friday, Panthers!

On Wednesday, April 29, we brought the energy with an incredible SOL Pep Rally! Our students showed up, showed out, and had an amazing time. Now, it’s time to channel that same energy and focus into the upcoming SOL assessments. Our Panthers have worked hard and prepared with purpose. Now, it’s time to demonstrate all they know.

Parents, we appreciate your partnership in ensuring students get a good night’s rest and arrive each day with fully charged laptops, ready to succeed.  SOL Testing dates are listed below for your review.

Next week, May 4–8, 2026, we proudly celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers are truly exceptional, and we invite you to help us make this a meaningful and memorable week for them. As we make our final push, please consider supporting by purchasing items from our wish list and sending contributions to LHMS PTA – Teacher Appreciation.

Join us on May 4, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. for our upcoming PTA meeting! We warmly welcome all families, particularly, our rising 7th-grade families who are interested in learning more about the LHMS PTA and how to get involved.

We’re excited to gather new ideas, welcome fresh perspectives, and begin building our team of officers for the upcoming school year. This is the perfect opportunity to get connected and make a meaningful impact in our school community.

Come out, show your support, and experience the incredible voices that make our school shine as we celebrate our final Choral Concert of the year on May 6, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in our school’s Lecture Hall.  Our talented students have poured their hearts into every note, and this performance promises to be a powerful showcase of their growth, passion, and dedication. From moving harmonies to uplifting melodies, you are truly in for a treat.

Finally, please take a moment to review the remaining events for the school year below and stay connected as we finish strong together!

Have a terrific weekend!

Principal Mizell

STUDENT SERVICES

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

May is recognized nationwide as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to support the emotional well‑being of children, teens, and adults. Middle school is a key stage for mental health because students are developing their identities and managing new social and academic pressures. Talking openly about mental health reduces stigma and helps students feel more comfortable asking for support. We are inviting all students to wear green every Monday in May. Green symbolizes growth, renewal, and hope, making it the official color of Mental Health Awareness Month.

SOL Reminders

The SOLs are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned and what areas they may still need support in. Please partner with us by encouraging your student(s) to do their best on each assessment. Our goal is to help students reach their full potential, and an accurate SOL score is an important data point in that mission.

All testing begins at 7:30am.  Please avoid scheduling appointments on testing days and help your child arrive at school on time.

May 6: Reading 7 and 8

May 12: Physical Science (8th grade only)

May 14: Mathematics

Spring SEL Screener

Students at Hughes MS took the SEL Screener earlier this month. The SEL Screener provides information on their social-emotional skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. We will mail a paper copy to families who do not have an active ParentVUE account.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please reach out to your child's LHMS counselor with any questions.

Social Emotional Learning with Second Step

This week in Flex, students completed the Game Plan survey in Naviance.  This survey is designed to help students begin thinking about and planning for their goals after high school graduation.  Family conversation starter: Ask your student to tell you about their Game Plan survey and goals.
