Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Families,

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. This week reflected the energy, care, and commitment our community brings to ensuring every student is supported, challenged, and thriving.

In alignment with the FCPS Strategic Plan—focusing on strong instruction, a positive and inclusive school environment, and meaningful student experiences—here are a few highlights from our week:

  • Our 4th grade students approached MAP testing with focus and perseverance. This reflects our shared commitment to high-quality instruction and ensuring students are prepared to demonstrate their learning.
  • Students across grade levels engaged in rich, hands-on learning beyond the classroom. Our 5th graders explored the Air and Space Museum, Kindergarten went to the Cub Run Nature Center, 6th grade traveled to the National Gallery of Art, and our PreK students visited Frying Pan Park, supporting real-world connections and deeper understanding.
  • On Wednesday, student leaders from each grade partnered with our leadership and construction teams to plant and seal a time capsule for our new building. This moment honored student voice and belonging—key priorities in creating a connected and inclusive school community.
  • Thursday’s Career Day brought learning to life as volunteers shared their experiences and inspired our students to think about their future pathways. We are grateful for the strong family and community partnerships that make opportunities like this possible. Special thanks to Ms. Bryant, Ms. Boyer, and Mr. Falkey for their leadership.

As we look ahead, we are preparing for our SOL assessments, which begin May 7 and continue through the end of the month. Students are engaging in steady, spiral review during intervention and extension time, with instruction grounded in current student data. This approach allows us to both reinforce key skills and extend learning where students are ready, ensuring each child is supported for success.

We are also continuing to see strong progress in student attendance. I am proud to share that our chronic absenteeism rate has improved to 6.2%, the lowest in our pyramid. This growth reflects the shared commitment between school and home. Consistent attendance has a direct impact on student learning, confidence, and connection to school, and we are grateful for your partnership in making this possible for our Bees.

Throughout the week, I continued classroom visits, staff collaboration, and partnership with our Region and central office teams, all grounded in our focus on the FCPS Instructional Framework and continuous improvement. I was also honored to represent Herndon at our Region 1 principals meeting and share a “mission moment” highlighting the impact of our collective work.

Finally, it was a joy to celebrate our students at the Science Olympiad at Oakton High School last weekend. Their effort, teamwork, and success reflect the many ways our students are growing and excelling. Special thanks to our parent volunteers and our wonderful sponsors Ms. Deshong and Ms. Helton.

As we move through the final stretch of the school year, we remain committed to supporting academic growth, fostering strong relationships, and ensuring every student feels a strong sense of belonging.

Thank you for being an important part of our school community.

In Your Service,

Dr. Vereb

Career Day 2026

Collage of 6 photos of students, counselors, and presenters at Career Day

Airline pilots, artists, STEM professions, teachers, and more!  Over 50 careers were represented at our Herndon ES Career Day! Thank you to Ms. Bryant who has been doing this for 29 years and our amazing counseling team, Mr. Falkey and Ms. Boyer, for putting all this together. Our young Bees were excited to learn!

We would like to give a big shout out to the presenters who came from all walks of life and took time out of their busy day to share their careers with our students.

Thank you to our wonderful teachers, staff, volunteers, and PTA who guided the students with making their briefcases and business cards, set up and break down of the event, donating food for breakfast and lunch, and clean up!
