A Note From Principal Seward

Carlos

Dear South Lakes Families and Seahawk Community,

We are now in the final stretch of the school year! This is a time that calls for renewed focus, consistency, and purpose. This is the moment for our entire community to truly lock in and commit to finishing strong. In the classrooms and other learning spaces I have visited, I have already seen students engaging, connecting, and getting ready to finish the year strong! That energy will be essential as we prepare for the important weeks ahead.

Our ASAAP (After-School Academics and Attendance Program) continues to serve as a critical support system, providing targeted academic assistance and mentorship to help students stay on track. We encourage students to harness this opportunity.

The weeks ahead will move quickly, and this is a time that requires discipline, focus, and commitment. When our students attend regularly, engage deeply, and take advantage of the supports available to them, they position themselves for success both in the classroom and beyond. I

Thank you for all that you do to support South Lakes High School. It is the collective commitment of our families, educators, and community members that makes this such a special place. Let us continue to lift one another up and move forward together.

With Gratitude,

Carlos Seward

We value your feedback. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.

#AttendanceMatters

We have 6 weeks until graduation and 7 ½ weeks until the last day of school.  This is a critical time to keep up with attendance and Q4 assignments! We have noted a trend in with increased absences, the number of missed assignments/assessments also increase.  We are available on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday for ASAAP to recover time for missed assignments and attendance.

We are here to support your student finish the year strong!

SEAHAWK Spotlights

SEAL Cord Ceremony

seal2

At South Lakes, our three Student Equity Ambassador Leaders (SEALs) are Escarleth Betancourth Aplicano (12), Sydney Howell (12) and Taylor Scott (11). Our SEALs work in collaboration with our Student Voice Group to share perspectives of underrepresented voices at South Lakes and to improve the student experience. On April 21st, the FCPS office of Equity and Cultural Responsiveness held a ceremony to celebrate the senior SEALs and their work on behalf of students in the county. Seniors were presented with a cord for graduation.

Student Equity Ambassador Leaders (SEALS) is a leadership program for high school students. It provides a platform for student voices and a better understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students in the program take part in leadership development, projects, and relevant experiences. They foster a school culture that sees and supports racial, linguistic, and cultural identities. As they share stories of marginalized students, they can build a more fair and culturally responsive learning environment.

Congratulations to our South Lakes High School senior Seals, Escarleth and Sydney (missing from the picture).

Important Q4 Reminders

End-of-Year Policy Reminders

2026EOY1

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, we want to ensure our environment remains safe, focused, and productive. Please review these key FCPS/ SLHS Policy reminders to help your student finish the year strong.

🕒 Tardy Policy

Consistent attendance is critical for finishing the curriculum and preparing for final assessments.

  • Arrival: Students are expected to be in their classrooms and ready to learn by 8:10a.m. We will be having random sweeps and any students arriving late without a proper excuse or on a pre-arranged waiver will be subject to After School Detention. Students with Parking Passes may be subject to loss of privilege/ short term no parking consequence.
  • Impact: Excessive tardiness disrupts instruction and may result in administrative intervention or loss of certain end-of-year privileges.
  • Support: Please help your student plan for morning traffic or bus schedules to ensure a prompt start.

📱 Cell Phone Policy (SR&R)

To maintain an environment free from digital distractions, FCPS enforces specific guidelines regarding personal devices:

  • Expectation: Cell phones should be "off and away" during instructional time. This is a State order. The only time cell phones and all accompanying equipment (ear buds, airpods, etc.) is IN the cafeteria during their assigned lunch.
  • Focus: This policy encourages face-to-face social interaction and deep concentration on final projects and exams.
  • Compliance: Students who do not follow the "off and away" rule will have their phones confiscated until the end of the school day and / or other consequences as laid out in the SLHS cell phone policy.

💻 Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

With increased digital project work at the end of the year, please remind students of the Acceptable Use Policy:

  • Educational Purpose: School-issued devices and networks are for school-related work only.
  • Digital Citizenship: Students must engage in respectful, safe, and legal behavior online.
  • Monitoring: Activity on FCPS devices is monitored to ensure safety. Inappropriate use may lead to a loss of technology privileges during this critical testing window.
  • Note: FCPS is noticing an uptick in the number of students using fake accounts and proxy servers to get around laptop security measures. This is a violation of Acceptable Use but may also result in an Academic Integrity Policy violation as well.

🚗 Morning Traffic Patterns

The Stadium Side is for Drop-Offs

The Stadium Side Kiss and Ride is our only designated area for parent drop-offs. It is designed and staffed to keep the drop-offs moving safely and quickly to get students into the building at Door 4.

The Flagpole Side is for Student Drivers Only

The Flagpole entrance – at Door 1 - and adjacent parking lot are reserved for permitted student drivers and staff.

Currently, unauthorized drop-offs in the Flagpole area are causing significant congestion. This "bottleneck" is preventing our student drivers from reaching their assigned spots, causing them to be late for class through no fault of their own.

Moving forward, we ask that you:

  • Follow the Signs: Please respect the "No Drop-Off" signs on the Flagpole side.
  • Keep it Moving: Use the Stadium Side Kiss and Ride even if it feels like a slightly longer loop; it is actually faster for the overall flow of school traffic.
  • Protect Student Time: Help us ensure that student drivers aren't penalized for traffic delays occurring on school property.

There are so many positive things going on in these last weeks- Art Shows, Sporting events, The Musical and other performances! If we tighten up these above-mentioned items, we can focus on a strong academic and extra-curricular close to the year!

Skyview HS - Community Boundary Meetings

Skyview HS Boundary Meetings - Your Voice Matters!

FCPS has begun the process of developing the boundary for our new high school, Skyview High School. The school is located in the western part of Fairfax County. Establishing a boundary for a new high school affects surrounding schools and pyramids. The following western pyramids are included in this process:

  • Centreville High School
  • Chantilly High School
  • Oakton High School
  • South Lakes High School
  • Westfield High School

As part of this process, FCPS is providing Community Engagement Opportunities for those communities affected by the change. There are both in-person and virtual options for each meeting.

At the community meetings this week, initial draft scenarios will be shared and you will be provided an opportunity to share you feedback. If you plan to attend in person or virtually, please click one of the links to register.

The same information will be shared at both meetings. Community feedback from those meetings will help inform the development of one or more revised scenarios.

The revised scenarios will be presented during a second round of community meetings in May. If you plan to attend in person or virtually, please click one of the links to register.

The same information will be shared at both meetings.

This is our chance as a community to use our voice in support of the South Lakes High School community. We encourage your attendance at the meetings and to share your voice.

FCPS Updates

Immun

Required Immunizations for the 2026 - 2027 School Year

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    •  As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

All students entering 12th grade are to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS StudentsFCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.
