What's Happening Mount Eagle

April 17, 2026

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

This week, our 1st grade students enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the National Zoo! With the warm weather, students had a fantastic time exploring and were excited to see animals such as pandas, elephants, and meerkats. It was a memorable day of learning and discovery.

We are also celebrating Earth Week at Mount Eagle! Students are participating in a fun Spirit Week to recognize the importance of caring for our planet. In addition, we are looking forward to our 13th Annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM. Please see the article below for more details—we hope you can join us!

As a reminder, school will be closed on Tuesday, April 21 to allow the community access to our building for voting.  Teachers will be working from home to ensure they are ready to continue instruction on Wednesday.

As we move further into the final quarter, students are also beginning their end-of-year assessments. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. SOL testing dates are included in the article below for your reference.

Thank you for your continued support during this busy and exciting time of year!

Warmly,
Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

PTO Events & News

At Mount Eagle, every parent is a member of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). It's a great way to connect with other parents, learn about how to support your child, and have fun! There are many ways you can share your voice, talents, and time. Check out the PTO Website for more information. It's available in multiple languages.

PTO Meeting, Thusday, April 23

Please join our PTO for our April Meeting at 6:30 pm.  In addition to planning for our April 25 Earthy and and the May 1 Multicultural Night, we will be joined by our School Board Representative. Marcia St. John-Cunning. This is a great opportunity to share community concerns and hear about FCPS goals.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year. Our current absentee rate is 15.9%.

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
