Administration Note

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful but warm week!  It certainly gave us a true taste of summer.  We celebrated our military families with a spirit day and a special breakfast in their honor. A truly meaningful opportunity to recognize and thank those who serve our country.

We also enjoy Heritage Night - always a special event for all of our families.  Check out the fabulous pictures. A wonderful time to come together!

We have Earth Week celebration and will celebrate with Go Green and Spirit Days!  Monday begins with animal attire!!

A gentle reminder that we have no school on April 21 due to the election.  Teachers will be working remotely but the school is closed for the Election.  We will NOT have the early release previously scheduled on April 22.

Warmly,

Holly McGuigan          Tia Hawkins                     Sarah Talley

Principal                      Assistant Principal           Assistant Principal

The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage

Adjusted Elementary Early Release Wednesdays - Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.  This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.

Thanks to our AMAZING and GENEROUS Kent Gardens students, parents, and teachers, the Kent Gardens Best Buddies chapter was able to raise $461 from Kindness Gram sales in the weeks leading up to Spring Break. The KG Best Buddies delivered around 200 Kindness Grams to students and they brought everyone a lot of joy. Please join Team Kent Gardens for the Friendship Walk NEXT SATURDAY, April 25. Registration is STILL open  - Come join us!

Native Plant Instillation

We are thrilled to be the recipient of 'Revitalize, Restore and Replant' (R3) program. R3 is an award-winning program whereby ecologists from Fairfax County Stormwater Management work with students and staff at school to transform underutilized grass areas to transform the areas into thriving pollinator meadows through instillation of several hundred native plants. Our 4th graders with the support of Ms. Bulford and Ms. Waters helped prepare the areas and plant the native plants. It was an exciting week with a great deal of student engagement!

Spring Testing Season is Here! 📅

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season. It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Positivity Project Focus - Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

This week, our school will focus on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This means noticing and valuing the world's beauty and people's skills and not taking things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence involves recognizing and enjoying what is admirable. Positive psychology identifies three types of goodness: physical beauty (like sunsets or music), exceptional skills or talents, and moral goodness (like character strengths). Appreciating beauty can inspire awe, skills can generate admiration, and moral goodness can elevate us. These feelings help us forget ourselves and find more joy and meaning in the world.

This strength helps individuals experience positive emotions and connect with the world around them. It is outward-facing, focusing on external beauty and excellence, often leading to deep absorption in awe or admiration, which can help alleviate anxieties. It is also linked to other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.

To practice and encourage this strength at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Collections for Givology

A student from TJHSST is collecting for Givology and is working to spread outreach and awareness about Givology’s mission in the community. Givology is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to quality education worldwide. The mission and initiative is to fund teacher training, provide scholarships for rural girls and refugees, and build vital WASH facilities in countries like Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Uganda. It was co-founded in 2008 by a TJ alumni, and since inception, we have raised $700,000 for 5,000+ students in 30+ countries.  Their goal is to collect personal hygiene products (toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant etc.) and school supplies (pencils, erasers, crayons, etc.) to support students in under-resourced communities. The specific organization we are hoping to uplift is Mission Mochila, which is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering underprivileged youth in El-Salvador. We have a box in the lobby - drop off donations there! Informational Links: School supply/ hygiene wishlist; Mision Mochila Website; Givology Website
