FCPS School Year Calendar
Edison Community,
This week at Edison was full of energy, pride, and connection across our community.
We wrapped up a fantastic Spirit Week celebrating the Month of the Military Child and our spring sports season. Wednesday’s Purple Up Day was especially powerful. It was a sea of purple throughout the building, with students and staff showing their support for our military-connected families. Thank you to Ms. Mahan and Mr. Schlemmer for their leadership in working with our student ambassadors to make the day so meaningful.
Today’s pep rally was the perfect way to close out the week. The weather could not have been better, and it was great to see everyone outside, engaged, and showing school spirit. A big thank you to our leadership class, along with Mr. Dight and Mrs. Craft, for the time and effort they put into organizing such a successful event.
On Wednesday, we also had the honor of welcoming our rising ninth graders from Twain and Holmes Middle Schools. It was a great opportunity for them to experience Edison firsthand, connect with our students, and learn more about the programs, activities, and opportunities available here. Thank you to Mrs. Bentley and our student groups for helping to support and organize this visit. We are excited to officially welcome them in August as the Class of 2029.
There is no shortage of activity on campus this weekend. Tonight, we are hosting our Pyramid Art Show. I encourage everyone to come out and see the incredible talent across our schools. Thank you to our art teachers, Mrs. Utech, Mr. Nelson, Ms. Wallace, Mr. Dicillo, and Mrs. Garriott, for inspiring and supporting our students’ creativity.
Our spring play, You Can’t Take It With You, is also taking the stage. We hope to see strong support for our performers and crew. In addition, our athletic fields are busy with baseball, softball, and soccer competitions, another great way to support our students.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Marshall High School will host the FCPS Special Education Conference. We are especially proud that two of our students, Aicha Boyd and Madison Roegner, will be recognized for their work with Best Buddies. This is a meaningful accomplishment and a reflection of the inclusive culture we strive to build every day.
Saturday evening, we will host Bingo, sponsored by our Athletic Boosters. It promises to be a fun, community-centered event. I will be there calling numbers and, if I’m lucky, hoping to win a round myself.
For your awareness, I want to provide transparency about the police presence on the Edison campus today. At approximately 10:00 AM this morning, the school administration was notified of an isolated altercation involving two students on the connector bus. In accordance with our standard safety protocols, FCPD responded to the school to investigate. Please be assured that all students and staff were safe, there was no broader threat to our school community, and our regular day continued without interruption. We take all matters of student safety seriously and appreciate your continued partnership in keeping our school environment safe.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our students, staff, and programs. Have a great weekend.
Amanda Burke Principal
As we near Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4th – 8th, we invite you to take a moment and express your gratitude to our staff here at Edison High School! Has a staff member gone the extra mile, given you support, gotten your student excited about a subject, or do you just want to say thank you?
Fill out the Thank a Staff Member Form and let them know.
Sometimes a simple thank you can make a lasting impact!

On Monday, April 6, parents and guardians of Edison HS will receive an email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and provides an opportunity to share anonymous feedback about our school’s leadership and environment.
Topics covered in the survey include:
✅ Instructional leadership
✅ School climate
✅ Management (human resources and organizational)
✅ Communication and community relations
✅ Culturally responsive and equitable leadership
✅ Professionalism
The questionnaire will be open April 6 - April 19 and will be collected online. When you receive the email from noreply@fcps.edu, please take a few minutes to complete it. Your input is valuable and helps shape the future of our school. Thank you for your time and feedback!
We are excited to support your student’s transition to high school! For the third year, Edison High School is offering an optional Jump Start program for rising 9th-grade students.

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.
FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage.
Adjusted Elementary Early Release WednesdaysStudents will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.
This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.
The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs. View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website.
The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026 — has not changed.
From April 27th to May 20th, Edison High School’s juniors and seniors enrolled in a culminating IB course will complete their IB exams. IB exam schedules will be sent to each student’s FCPSSCHOOLS.NET email addresses with the start times and locations of their exam. Students must arrive on time for their designated exam sessions, as there are no makeups. Parents/Guardians can access the IB testing calendar at https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/assessment-and-exams/exam-schedule/. Please note that our exams will begin at 8:10 AM for morning sessions and noon for afternoon sessions. If a student has a question about their exam schedule for a specific course, they should contact their course teacher; if they have a question about examination procedures, they should contact Ms. Devers at sddevers@fcps.edu.
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.
