Volunteers Needed for AP Testing
Woodson High School is in search of parent volunteers and/or recent graduate volunteers for this spring’s AP testing. This is a great opportunity to volunteer during the school day! Training will be provided.
AP exams will take place from May 4th – May 15th. There are two test sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Morning test sessions require proctors to be present from 7:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. (approximately). Afternoon test sessions require proctors to be present from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (approximately).
Please contact Elizabeth Walter ehwalter@fcps.edu if you are able to volunteer and help proctor. As always, we greatly appreciate the support. Thank you!
AP Testing
AP Testing season is upon us! In a few short weeks students in AP classes will begin taking their AP exam for potential college credit. Please take a minute to review the AP exam schedule to ensure you and your child know when they have an AP exam. In addition to the review your child’s teacher is doing in the classroom, FCPS is offering virtual review sessions through Schoology. Directions and offerings can be found here (our own Mrs. Wright and Mr. Pugh are running two of them). AP Classroom also has daily videos to help students review and prepare for test day. Here are some thing s to know for test day :
- If it is a morning exam, students must be in the cafeteria by 7:30 AM. Please make sure they have enough time to get through security by 7:30 AM
- If it is an afternoon exam, please make sure students have a ride home, the exams run approximately 3-4 hours, a ride home via the bus is not guaranteed. The meeting location for the afternoon sessions will be communicated to the student closer to the date of the exam.
- Students must bring a fully charged laptop, charger, #2 pencils, and calculator.
- Students cannot bring phones, smartwatch, tablet, fitness tracker, recording device, camera, backpack, notes, or any electronics that could connect to the internet. Students observed with any of these devices out or have on their person during an exam or a scheduled break will be dismissed from the exam
- Students must be on time for the exam. Once an exam has begun, no student will be allowed to enter the exam room and College Board will not grant requests for late testing.
More specific information will be coming home with your students as we get closer to the exam date. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mrs. Todd, Advanced Academic Coordinator. phtodd@fcps.edu

- Federal law requires schools to provide students one SOL test in reading, in mathematics, and in science during grades 9-12. These assessments provide information about student achievement to the parent/guardian, school, division, and state.
- State law requires students to verify credits to fulfill Standard and Advanced Studies diploma requirements, as outlined on the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage.
- SOL tests are the most common way students earn the verified credits they need. However, performance assessments (Social Studies only) or substitute assessments approved by the Virginia Board of Education may be another option available for your student to verify certain credits.
An SOL Tests in High Schools | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Information about timing and process for accessing SOL test results can be found on the SOL Test Results | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you do not want your student to participate in SOL assessments, you may choose to refuse testing. However, any decision to refuse SOL tests should be made in consultation with school staff to allow full consideration of any potential implications for on-time graduation. See the Information for Families about Testing and Assessments | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage section for information to support this decision.
If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your student’s school counselor or the assessment coach/school test coordinator, Kathleen Crosson.

If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify Woodson’s Assessment Coach, Kathleen Crosson, as soon as possible.
SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited
As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need. Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.
